Comment:
Professor Cere is very nice, lectures can be a bit boring but he covers the material well. Readings are interesting, especially if you're interested in the intersection of religion and human rights. Papers make you think, and quizzes are based off readings and power points. I'd recommend as an elective.

people who stopped showing for this class are just people who didn't care about the content in general, if you like religious studies this class is amazing, you learn a great deal and prof. Cere is such nice, helpful person and is an expert in his field, he's extremely approchable in office hours and in class, I loved this professor

The prof loves what he does and he is very passionate about it. The class however is quite boring ... After 2 weeks half of the class didn't show up anymore and no one was taking notes. The topics he touches on are quite interesting but unless it's for your major or minor or you're really into that stuff, don't take it. It's boring.

Cere is a sweet man, perhaps an unorganized lecturer at times. However, concepts he's trying to convey are not hard to grasp, just pick the important parts out from his tangents. Talks a lot about other scholars, but not necessarily a bad thing, as it's easy to just reference/incorporate their arguments for the quizzes and papers.

I really enjoyed this class a lot. Interesting, straightforward, and really makes you think a lot. I actually enjoyed doing the assignments. If you want an enjoyable class where you can certainly get an A/A-, take this one.

This isn't a hard class and the material would actually be interesting, but Cere is just not engaging at all as a lecturer...

This was such a great class! Cere covered super interesting topics and is very intelligent, so fun to listen to. The lectures were sometimes hard to follow, but quizzes (3) were 95% based on readings and unbelievably easy, plus free marks for handing in drafts. Papers were fun to write and marked easily as well. Overall, would take again!!!

I wanted to like this class SO BADLY and it was just terrible. He's a nice enough guy but a disorganized and frequently just ignorant prof. Would not recommend it, not even easy enough for it to be worth being so bad.

Easy and very interesting class, rare combination at McGill. I haven't attended a single lecture since week one. I suggest taking this class if you're into International relations, International Development or Human rights in general. the T.A's grading criteria were pretty straightforward. I would honestly take this class again.

Should not lecture. Professor Cere is a nice man but a terrible lecturer. I feel like most of the class consists of him talking about other scholars. The class material is interesting but the presentation of it is disorganized, it's hard to figure out what Prof Cere tries to convey. Most people don't bother showing up. Very disappointing class!

This professor does not know how to lecture. He rambles all over the place and takes forever to make a oherent point. The net result is that he looses half the class or at least half fall asleep.

The key to doing well in this course is the papers. The TA said many of the papers simply paraphrased the articles which was the reason for low grades. They prefer for you to argue a point. To get an A, cite more than the minimum amount of articles and throw in an outside source or two, also make sure you have a thesis and argue your point well.

Worst TAs I've ever encountered... took forever to receive marks for the papers and obviously none of them compared marks because some groups received way higher grades. There IS lecture material on the tests but just review the lectures online and they're easy.

The prof is nice and the lectures are fine, if youre a good writer you really should be fine. Unfortunately, the TAs for the course are some of the most negligent unhelpful, self absorbed, barely respond to emails and give incorrect or no feedback.

Professor Cere is a wonderful person. True that the lectures were often confusing and he tends to digress a bit but nonetheless he is a very kind and gentle man. Extremely approachable - which is not often the case with a lot of profs.Don't listen to rumours of difficulty - just try hard and you'll get the As (it's not rocket science!)

The lectures were completely useless, and always incredibly confusing. If you close read all the readings, you have the ability to do well on the tests. Content was interesting, but the presentation was very poor. Definitely not a bird course!

This class is not a bird course!! Professor Cere is a sweet man but going to class is not necessary. The lectures are boring, and unrelated. Do the readings and you can do well. The papers are marked by the TA, so how well you do depends which TA you get.

This course is awful - avoid it at all costs! The evaluation is primarily based on 3 papers which are marked by TAs. I was lucky enough to have the absolute worst TA I've ever come across at McGill: Lauren S. She gave everyone Bs on each of the 3 papers, with no clear reasons, and posts condescending messages on MyCourses. The prof is horrible too.

I really think Dr. Cere is such a pleasant man! He's shy - this is a given - but if you make an effort to get him and give him the opportunity to get to know you, you'll definitely be able to reap the rewards in terms of marks. In other words, he's willing to bump up your grade on a quiz or essay

Cere is very nice and interested in the course material. The lectures are quite monotonous and some of the readings are difficult to understand. We had to write 3 essays, 5 quizzes and a final exam. You just need to do the readings and remember the key points if you want a good grade!
