So sad to hear he retired. David Bells was my favorite teacher at CSUS. He refused to write me a letter of recommendation for a Jr. High teaching job. Instead, he offered to write one for the PhD program at Berkeley. It was the nicest thing I had ever heard.

Professor Bell is awesome: helpful, knowledgeable, fun. He's been teaching a long time so he knows what he's doing and he's confident doing it. He grades fairly but don't turn in papers padded with fluff; he hates that. Read the texts for the class and he'll help you to understand everything. Also, he gives fun, unique final exams.

i had low expectations coming into the class because it was outside of my major. prof. bell made the class interesting through his enthusiasm and spirit. his assignments are really easy and no tests. the only difficulty is keeping up with the reading. he is a good teacher and unfortunately retiring since this is his last semester.

I'm sure the entire CSUS English Department will feel the loss of the brilliant man when he retires at the end of the semester. I know I will.

Prof. Bell has been teaching at Sac State for 35 years and it was a pleasure to be in his class! His lectures are interesting, he explains things well, and he is so darn nice. He seems to really care and enjoy helping serious students succeed. Yes, he does always wear the same outfit... it's part of his charm :)

Professor Bell expects an honest attempt on homework, and he expects you to integrate the writing techniques he teaches into your papers. Five essays and 12 homework assignments. No final and no Midterm!! This was a GREAT class, and I REALLY learned something valuable that will help me write better papers for all my classes.

This is a really hard class, be prepared to grow as a writer and actually learn something. Prof. Bell is really helpful and willing to talk before or after class.

Had Bell as an undergrad and as a grad student. Now that I am a professor myself, I can say that I model everything I do after him. He is currently emiritus so take him while you can. The only writing professor who ever actually changed what I do when I write and for the better. All English majors this way...

Well the nice thing is, he pretty much goes over everything in class, the reading can be a little hard to understand. His grading seems fair, and because he's been teaching for over 25 years, he pretty much knows what he's doing. He still uses a type writer though, and he doesn't have a phone line or email, so it's hard to get ahold of him. but ok!

He is a good teacher and a nice guy. His class was fun and interesting - we performed plays and had to go see two of them. The work was pretty easy but the final was intense (two full essays that took almost three hours). I would totally recommend his class.

If you are an English Major and you don't take his advanced writing class, then you're a coward. He is brilliant, but he can't stand lazy students. P.S. Does he care? I had NO teaching credential and had NEVER taught a lesson at any level. His Letter of Rec. landed me a job at Rocklin High School. It was my first and only interview. Mr. Adams
