Comment:

Clearly he's teaching what he loves to do, so there's that. Worked in adv. pr. newspapers, freelance. Always tells about real world examples and that helps alot. Seems to care about students' success which goes a long way in my book. Funny and always wants to know wht you think.

Grades ridiculously hard. A maniac about attendance--counts it as part of the final grade. Lots of real world expereince. A good survey class if you are trying to pick a major. Nice guy and funny at 8 AM goes a long way.

Very strange class. He taught material but we were never quizzed on it. We had a midterm and a final and both were take home. Mostly projects and paper. He takes attendance but I think if I didn't go to one class I would have gotten the same grade. He taught, but all our grades were papers and projects. He grades unexpectedly hard.

COM203 and this professor were a bright spot in my semester. For an 8 oclock class, he makes coming a lot less painful than it could be. I really liked the six guest speakers who were all professionals and experienced in their fields. The papers are designed to get you to think about your career and goals and how Com might fit. Learned alot.

Don't take this class expecting to breeze through it. There is homework (300 word moodle posts) due before every class, which is just busy work. His papers are sort of interesting, but are too long. The only time you need the textbook is for the take home mid-term and final, but they seem completely unrelated to what he talks about during class.

I enjoyed Intro to Com and it is a basic intro class so no senior should be in there anyway. Belz is a great teacher and always shows concern for students who want to take part. There;s a lot of real world stuff he brings to the course outside the text book He always talks about 'out there' and thats what we need to know about.

If you are a senior do NOT take his class bc your too checked out for his nonsense. Tough grader on dumb assignments that are just busy work and outdated like him. He's also a lunatic about attendance and being on-time. Oh and did i mention he so rude and swears in class HAHAH. okay no. literally the worst. do not take him.

Belz is the man. Brings humor to a boring class. his essays are a decent amount of work but he helps you every step of the way and makes it cake. Don't do much busy-work during class, most everything is done for hw. Short story write-ups due almost every class but they're just summary responses. Not hard to get an A here, take him for sure.

I managed to get an A- in this class but it wasn't a class that you could just show up to and get an A. I went to the writing center and did extra credit. Mr. Belz is a great professor and if you have to take an effective writing course definitely take him!

AWESOME! Loved this class. Always interesting and brought the material into the real world. His assignments were challenging but interesting. Read and do the drafts and you'll be golden. Very fair and clear with what he wants. His quizzes are easy if you do the reading. Participate and your good! :D

Teaches lots of stuff that isn't in the textbooks like the ten pitfalls, the 25 effective habits, the crackerjack effect, ect. Show don't tell. Edit for it. Keep a good notebook you'll have a pretty complete texbook by the end anyway. Do the drafts, come to class to talk, and you'll do ok. He's funny and fair. Helped me get through my first year.

Mr. Belz is the best teach for a freshman to have. His effective writing class keeps you engaged and he is really helpful when writing the 3 required essays. There is a little more work than the other effective writing classes, but if you show up and do the essays you are going to well. there is no final, you just have to revise your essays.

Comment:

Loves Baltimore -- lots of readings, extra credit on the city. Takes papers really slow, peer editing, conferences, etc. Fair grader if you're happy with a B, but don't come looking for an A first time out. That's what the EC and rewrites are for. Work-intensive, like all writing classes. Not for the faint of heart, but he's not bad.
