Great prof. - if you speak to him outside of hours, he is very knowledgeable and does a fine job at providing instruction. He is also great at integrating humor into the class when possible to make things more enjoyable. I would recommend him.

He is ok. That chem205 final destroyed my soul. The questions were completely different from the practice exams and midterm!!!! I found all the practice exams and midterms relatively straightforward and reasonable but this final was unbelievable! For me, it was harder than chem233!

He reads right from the lecture slides. Nothing to be gained from coming to class. He cannot explain a single student question, and when students ask him to go through the math on a problem in class he completely messes it up and confuses everyone more. The unrelenting "God" references do not make it any better.

David was a nice prof, although his lecture notes were not well-organized. He just gave a introduction of all the materials and you had to review them in depth. As long as you put efforts, you would probably get a worthwhile grade. Overall, Dr. Chen and this class were not so bad. It really depends on you whether you could succeed.

The worst prof I have ever hard. Could not care less about teaching. So confusing and especially hard to be stuck with him in a class that has multiple sections and writes common midterms and finals. Did not cover some topics that were covered on the midterm. Very ambiguous when asked questions. Terrible class notes included many typos.

very nice person and reallyy cares about his students achievements. But not an effective professor. Doesn't explain theories in a understanding way. Seems lost in lecture. No difference than a text book

Only reads off lecture slides. provides no other explanation than whats provided in the text. Not very good at getting the main points across. But very nice and wants to be very helpful. super nice prof. he's pretty funny too.

Just had him for physical portion of 205. Was somewhat scared from reviews on rmp, but he's actually pretty good. He does go slow, but he also goes back and makes sure people understand concepts before moving on. Examples were sometimes a little trying, but I found him to be very effective. Good prof.

Absolutely the worst Chemistry professor at UBC. He did not know what he was talking about. Would get confused regularly and then just make things up. Was not prepared for classes. Made way to many lame jokes. Plus he tried to explain things as though the class was full of elementary students. Many more complaints but no more space. Text horrible.

I could not keep myself awake during his lectures. I mean he is a nice guy and all, but he adds in all these boring stories and when he is going over the material i just always zonked out. Still the class wasn't hard, you just teach yourself mostly.

A nice person, but not that great of a prof. Tries hard to increase interest level by including random stories, but actual time spent on course material isn't a lot. Explanations are unclear, long-winded and make my brain hurt/shut down. HEAVY reliance on self-learning through textbook. Exams are fairly easy - taken almost directly from textbook.

PROS: patient, MT is a bit easier. CONS: not too clear in lectures. He can be a great prof if ppl would just work harder. Don't expect the prof to feed you the info! Show some initiative!!! I only got 83 on the MT, but 91 on the final. This shows that if you go to the TA, go to Chen's office hrs, and do the work, you will be rewarded.

WORST PROF AT UBC, ever. Completely incompetent. Drop this course or switch sections if at all possible. If not possible, don't worry too much... sit in on another prof's lectures as his exams are very EASY....just do the practice exams etc.

I want to say something nice. I really do. But I can't. Because there's nothing nice to say about him. Wastes lecture hours on dumb things like his philosophies and his children. Didn't hear him give a clear answer to any question all term, and disrespectful of his students. It's like he tried to make an easy course hard using desperate measures.
