He is one of the most helpful and understanding profs I have ever had. Especially good with research help. Yes, he may go a little off topic in class, and perhaps he isn't the best for the introduction course, but after that, he is one of my favourite profs!

I have had Close for a number of courses and can safely say he is one of my favourites. I like his international focus for a department that can be rather insular. He is very helpful and understanding about extensions. I would recommend him to anyone with a genuine interest in international politics and not to those just looking for a filler course

Awesome prof! Clearly knows his stuff, although class can be pretty boring if you're not interested in the materials. It's not really necessary to go to class that often and he marks the papers really easily and he's pretty lenient about extensions.

When I went to class it felt like a major waste of time. So i generally did not go. The only thing he put on his tests were definitions. The final exam was almost entirely knowing definitions from the text book. It was the easiest class I took my first year of MIN. I wish his lectures would have been easier to learn from. Put all notes online.

This man should no longer lecture. He can't keep on topic - ever. Goes off on rants that have nothing to do with the material. He seems to forget that this is a 1000 level course, so he gets his TAs to grade like a 4000 level. Will help you if you ask very specific questions, if you ask him about an assignment will rant about something else...

this man should not be teaching anymore. his time has well passed. his lectures usually turned into him talking about his editors and he wrote his own book for the course. he goes off topic so easy (about nothing related to political science) and he marks like a 3rd yr english course. STAY AWAY!!!!!

The class was easy, all you have to do is read the text and know how to write a paper. I hardly went. his lectures are absolutely useless. He's often gets lost in what he is saying and speaks of things unrelated to the course. His notes are also useless. Read the book, show up for test and write the papers and it's an easy A anyway.

You can tell that he's a very smart man, but I feel like he never challenges you to think about anything. He just wants you to regurgitate stuff from the text. If I had've known how to study for him, I'd have an A. Pay attention to DEFINITIONS. That's all there is on the first midterm. Just read the text, and you'll have an easssyyy A.

(1) His notes/lectures are all over the place. But ask questions in class, it will help. (2)This man is the most helpful prof EVER. Whether its for the course or another, he's always there to help!! AVOID AT ALL COSTS! In a term with 4 A's, i was getting 60's with this guy. BRUTAL MARKER, his classes are useless to go to, and if not for the textbook(which is almost useless also), there would be no hope of having relevant material to study. I'm a poli sci major with all A's in every other course, but this guy was just my nemesis. STAY AWAY!

Stay away. Don't even try to understand his notes. Textbook is somewhat useful if you go through it with a fine tooth comb. You're more likely to find a cure for cancer than understand his lectures, as they are all over the place. Brutal marker. Asking him questions doesn't help, as he rambles on with his same old rhetoric which is not helpful.

Trust me when I say run away! His classes are not only the boring but he's a very awkward teacher - very uncomfortable. His notes are useless and you have no clue what to study for tests. The two assignments are painful, especially since he's a very difficult marker. For a 1000 level course, go with someone else. I regretted taking the class.

I liked him. I agree with a previous comment in that Newfoundlanders only like to hear about newfoundland, and that's why some people don't like him. Easy A class. More for internationally/politically minded people, others will probably find his class boring. Non poli sci majors should do 1000 with Sharaput instead.

Dr. Close is my all time fav. prof. He is very funny and is full of facts. If you don't do well with him you are obviously not university material. He is fair, honest and helpful. If you go to class, take notes and just pay attention, you will do well. If you don't, well check your IQ.
