He's a nice guy, but he leaves out important information until the day that it's necessary, and then it's too late. I would not recommend this class, lectures are boring, and everything just flies by.

Very boring in lecture to a point where it is hard to pay attention. He is passionate about his job but is the only one who seems to care about history at all. I use lecture as my nap time because he doesn't lecture about anything important. IF YOU ARE TAKING THIS CLASS AS A UP, DROP IT AND TAKE ANY OTHER CLASS. I wish someone warned me.

Such a nice guy, but lectures are so boring! He reads straight from his outlines and can get a bit off track-throwing everybody off. Lectures are boring. If you actually read the book and pay attention in lecture you'll get a A. GO TO SI SESSIONS.

Nice guy, can be a bit dry in lecture, but is a very easy grader and very respectful in & out of class. 2 exams, 2 papers (papers are on the readings done in-class), and some assignments on the reading. Attendance not mandatory and you could get by with skipping some class. One of my favorite history profs so far.

Dr. Rutherford is a great professor. He really knows what he's talking about, and you can tell that he loves it. He's got a somewhat dry sense of humor, but I found him to be quite funny. His lectures got a little boring at times, but if you make sure you pay attention you'll enjoy the class and do fine. The tests aren't hard as long as you study.

Super nice guy. The lectures can get pretty boring though and hard to figure out what you actually need to know. He provides good study guides for exams and is a very friendly, nice guy.

Nice guy, but by the far the most boring lecture I've ever been to. I also never really understood what I should know from lecture; it was sketchy. But lots of extra credit + puttin in a decent amount of work= fairly easy A.

Dr. Rutherford is a very knowledgeable teacher, but his lectures put me to sleep. His notes are very difficult to read if you don't in the front rows and he is very monotonous and hard to listen to. The study guides were awesome, very helpful. I went to his lecture maybe three times and I got an A. Just know the study guide.

The lecture hall this class is in doesnt support microphones, so he is difficult to hear, and even more difficult to understand. The class is team taught so on some days, you will have to listen to a differnt guy who is harder to understand than Prof. Rutherford. My Advise is Dont take this with him. Find another prof This class is a waste of time.

Dr. Rutherford was my first history professor at CMU and so far he has been close to the best. He is extremely! knowledgable and very interesting to listen to. Try and keep up with the readings, but coming to class and taking good notes is the most important thing! Also attend discussion it will do nothing but help you!

I thought he was a very good prof. He gets off track and likes to talk about things that arent that important but as long as you read the book you'll be fine. Make time lines and just study the BIG events n this class isn't that bad. He tries to make jokes so he tries to be funny gotta give him credit for trying...

Rutherford is a very nice guy and very smart, but he doesn't teach well. He skips around frequently and rarely gives out useful information. He cares too much about showing pictures and pointing where random buildings are instead of going over the big facts, and you never get any idea of what he wants for the tests from him.

Dr. Rutherford was one of the best teachers that I have had at CMU. He presents the information very clearly and in a way that is easy to remember. The class was harder but it is a level 300 class. He was always available to help students who needed it. The class is easy to pass if you go to class, take good notes, and study just a little bit.
