I have mixed feelings about this man. My class was discussion based, but he spent most of the time speaking anyways. He tends to validate his own opinions, and will question you if you have an interpretation of the reading that differs from his. He's a genuinely good person, but his teaching strategy is... bad.

Literally do not take this class if it is taught by Flower. He is unbelievably difficult to work with. He does not care about your ideas, interpretations, or thoughts. He only ever validates his own opinions. As long as you sit and listen to his agonizing lectures and spit back up his words, you might get a good grade.

Have repeatedly heard him referred to as "a crazy son of a *****" and "wacked out hippie." I actually have found the classes I've taken with him to be relatively informative and entertaining. He's not the most engaging lecturer in the world, but he picks decent readings and is a good facilitator of discussions.

This man is by far the worst professor I've ever had. It's not so much that he's a tough grader, as that he has unrealistic demands and no interest whatsoever in what students might think about the material. OK for all of you who say Flower isn't hot- he used to be a surfer. Flower is a really, really hard professor. It's really hard to get a good grade in his class. If you can get over it, take Modern American Writing anyway, because he knows a****load and his lectures (albeit monotonous) are very thorough and nuanced.
