Comment:

She's a fair teacher as long as you participate. She's a character for sure, and she had some questionable ethics and professional standards. She was calling students on their cellphones... Do the work, go to class, adhere to her criteria and you'll do fine. Lectures are not very interesting and sometimes the class feels long.

Lectures are all over the place. Tests are ok - she gives info about exams before hand. Really pissed that she was sick & behind on course schedule so WE had 3 novels to read, discuss, submit a paper, and be tested on in less than a month. Most profs remove content when it's their fault the class is behind - not her! Gonna be a tough final.

Scott is helpful, clear, and easy. But her grasp of her own subject is very, very tenuous. Not only does she having nothing new or interesting to say about Canadian lit, she is actually less informative than just reading a book. Unless literature is so scary that you need a Grade 9 level course on it, don't take Scott's class.

I don't understand why people are saying she is professional. Strong perception and overconfident about herself! Saying she is not a good teacher is an understatement! Also agree with the other guy, good luck talking to her if she had a bad mood!

Wasn't sure how I felt about a Canadian Lit class but fell in love with Debra's teaching right away. Ultra professional, well spoken and informative. Very passionate, very kind. Even though her teaching can be abstract she will accept fairly literal uncomplicated answers.The class was a bit of work but that should be expected in college :)

I loved Debra - like below, she doesn't approach the material very linearly, preferring to make thematic connections within the works and between the works. Most helpful if you talk to her outside of class - supportive & encouraging - one of the best English teachers at Langara! She had a hard spring 2011 term but handled it very well. Recommended!

Debra is a great person and teacher: insightful, helpful, and understanding. She listens to her student's opinions and makes everyone feel like their opinion is valid. She can get a little off topic- but, really, who doesn't? Digressions are my favourite part, anyhow!

Great Prof! Very funny and easygoing teacher. Talks a lot in class - if you don't like speaking in class then take her class - I haven't spoken a word and I'm still getting a good mark! If you talk to her outside of class she is warm and friendly and very encouraging and helpful. I want to be able to speak like her - smartly and eloquantly.

One of the best professors I have ever had. She really cares about what she is teaching and it seems that she really cares about her students too. I still keep in touch with her. Go to see her in her office...you shall succeed. I actually miss her cheerfulness and inspiring presence. Take her class if you have the opportunity.

Talks a mile-a-minute and wanders off topic, but otherwise, she's a wonderful, caring teacher who knows what she's talking about. If you speak up IN class (It can be difficult to get a word in edgewise, but be persistent!), talk to her outside of class and show her that you care about doing well, she'll bend over backwards to help you succeed.

Great teacher.. best english teacher I have ever had... then again, it was business writing work rather than harder essay type work. The key is.. get her help outside of class.. you will increase your grade by about a full leter grade! Comment:

A new course into which Debra Scott put a great deal of thought and preparation on the chosen sources. She presented the material with humour and sensitivity. Debra was very approachable and encouraging. Lots of essay topic choices, and she marked fairly with considerate and supportive comments. I wish I had discovered her courses earlier.
