I was so interested in the subject matter and read that she had pretty good reviews. She is so boring, all she does is read her notes to the class.

Not an interesting prof. Anybody can read lectures to class. No class participation. Minimal help on the term paper. Only relief from her tiring readings was when she brought in outside people to lecture without notes.

Mauzy is great. She is very knowledgeable about her subject, and made politics in Southeast Asia passioning. She's very clear and tells anecdotes to lighten the course frequently. Likes to have speakers to make the class lively. Not a lot of work to do. Slow marker and tends to read her notes, though. Would highly recommend.

Mauzy herself is great: super helpful and accommodating. Didn't like the seminar though. Every class included an hour and a half presentation from peers, and a short discussion afterward. Needed to submit summary of readings every class, which became tedious. With a class like this, you don't actually learn much, but does improve your speaking.

Her lectures are extremely difficult to sit through as she mainly reads as many facts as she can from a certain country. The midterm and final are based almost entirely on lectures and on little annoying details. She doesn't really encourage student participation. Very nice lady, but not a good prof in my opinion.

One of the best courses I've taken at UBC. Simply AWESOME. Great topics, great discussions every class. Prof Mauzy likes to have students speak rather than herself, but will step in with some great insights when the discussion wanes. Bottom line - superb seminar. Only caution: WATCH YOUR GRAMMAR!!!!

Boring lectures which go on and on and on.Mauzy is knowledgable about South East countiries, but her lectures include too much of extraneous material which she then tests on the exam. Also you MUST be present in all lectures, cause exam is 99% based on them.Question: why did I have to buy the textbook

Lectures are OK, but not really engaging. Too much emphasis on writing down many details which are often irrelevant to the larger picture. She is a good and knowledgable professor, but a more clear outline for the historical development of each SEA country is needed.

By far, the best political science teacher I've had at UBC (even better than Sens!) An expert in her field, she manages to make the course engaging, humorous, and thought provoking...and no text book!
