Comment:
Absolutely loved Mastronarde! This course was my favorite of the term by far, thanks to his lectures. It was an hour of incredible information, and he presented it in a very easy-to-follow way. I know some fellow students found that he was a little monotone, but I loved every minute of it and am sad it's over!

This class totally depends on the GSI. It was interesting but TONs of reading. Mastronarde is a little shy guy who lectures monotone. BUT if you can get past the monotone speech, his lectures are really interesting and full of insight.

Donald Mastronarde is literally like a god. I love this man with all my heart. Seriously, my favorite teacher I have ever had, and he knows _everything_ there is to know about Attic Greek. He may seem dry, but he's actually hilarious.

With no prior knowledge or interest in Classics on the whole, I got more out of this class than I expected. Mastronarde is a cute old man that obviously knows his stuff. His lectures are all very dry, but if you attend them, you need not do any more reading than summaries. Sure, it's not the most fun thing in the world, but he's a brilliant guy!

As a Classics major, let me honestly say that he is a very bad lecturer. You really need to read all the readings if you want to do well on the tests (he cites random passages for identification), but so long as you do so you can skip all the lectures (I went to about 1 class every 2 weeks). Make sure you get the vocab from the lecture slides onlin

his reading materials are heavy but still manageable, no need to attend his lectures, just download the slides online and study by yourself. exams are so so, but you definitely need to read every single readings.

Extremely knowledgeable, competent, and clear-speaking professor. While he may be a boring lecturer at times, he covers everything well and provides remarkable insight regarding the reading material. He articulates things eloquently, although he may elaborate a little too much and has a tendency to run out of time.

The Greek master. He explains everything very clearly and expects a lot out of the students. The tests and quizzes are fair and the extra credit is a real life-saver. My advice: leave nothing blank on a test or quiz, be prepared to work extremely hard, and don't take things too personally.

in a word he's a snob.ask anything in office hours not listed somewhere in his disorganized text; he gives a snooty glance and then sucks air through his teeth while he utters something snide under his breath and then gazes away at his computer screen. cold fish or stick in the mud.seems to be the global authority on Greeksnobbism

DJ Mastro: Still a boring lecturer, and still a Greek Bad-Ass. Extremely helpful at understanding Tragedy, formulating paper topics, etc, just don't translate anything wrong because he WILL make fun of you.

I really enjoyed this professor, actually; I've had him before, and he's warmed up to me since the first time I was his student. His knowledge of Greek is still astoundingly good (try to follow him in sight reading; it's masterful). He doesn't teach the grammar as much in 102, but he will provide necessary review at times.

Mastronarde is a good professor- he's obviously extremely knowledgable in the subject and gives great analyses of the reading material. If you're interested in Greek literature, this would be a great class! One of my favorite classes so far.

I really wanted to take this class and learn about greek mythology... Yeah.. this class sucked! There's no other way to phrase it. It was boring! He turns down the lights, shows you pictures and speaks in a monotonous voice. Fun. Lots of reading! Really not fun!

This is not a good course choice if you're simply looking to fulfill a pre-req or a breadth. If you are interested in Greek mythology, you'll like this class. If you aren't particularly interested in it, you're better off picking an easier class. This class has A LOT of required reading.

What should have been an amazingly interesting course was SO BORING. His lectures on Athens were damn reminiscent of my grandpa's slide show on his trip to Greece. "There's a building. There's a statue. There's the statue from another angle. And another." My GSI was the only thing that made the class tolerable. (Justin Schwab - amazing.)

Very knowledgeable, wonderful sense of humor, definitely a fundamentally good person, fair in his judgments, but gives lectures in a nasal monotone. If you are prejudiced against dorkiness you won't like him much; if you find that loveable you will.

This is a guy only a mother could love. He loves being pretentious, likes to think of himself as an educated man, well above his peers or others in society in general. He is condescending, boring, and arrogant. Maybe if he were taller, he would have more confidence in himself and be a better lecturer. He's nice, but he holds back.

Like being taught at the feet of the master. But he's so knowledgable that I think he forgets how difficult this is for beginners. I studied till my brain turned to liquid and oozed out my ears, and still felt like I was behind all semester. On the plus side you come away with a strong foundation in Greek grammar. Might as well learn from the best!
