He post part of the lecture notes online before each lecture, so it is not mandatory to attend the class. Be prepared to read around 7 books and writing papers on them. Your grade will depend on how lenient your TA is.

Professor Margadant is a good lecturer but he has the worst TAs, I got the worst TA and this is my first qtr in davis. I hated my TA, I felt like he discrimenated against me because Im not American. He lowered my grades. And when I talked about it with the Prof. he said he trusted the TAs grading technique. I am so mad I cant express it in words

Prof. Margadant is Excellent. Passionate about history. Material is fascinating yet rather dark (World Wars, Nihilism, Stalinism, etc). Lectures are superb, a bit fast yet very well prepared. Be in lecture and do the readings. You will struggle if you skip either. Amount of reading is substantial but not overwhelming. Highly recommended.

Very apparent that the professor loved the subject he was teaching. Very helpful, just have to ask. The amount of reading can be daunting, but the tests are fair.

Professor gives clear interesting lectures-really into his lectures and sure knows what he is saying. Lectures help for midterms and final so recommended to go and take good notes. Hardly used textbook since most of his lectures are what you need to know for the midterms and final. T.A. may be a tough grader. Easy class

Gives good lectures that helps on the midterms and finals. Textbook not really needed as long you take good notes. Some books to read relevant to midterms and finals. Professor is really into his teachings for this class. Knows this subject matter a lot.

Interesting class, he's a good lecturer. I guess I can't say anything bad about him, especially since he didn't force us to work that hard. We read a few books, he gave us options for our essays so we could decide what books we wanted to read in advance. His tests were REALLY easy and the text book was irrelevant. DONT WASTE UR MONEY ON IT.

He puts a lot of time into preparing his lectures... I liked this class because you can get by with a basic knowledge of what was going on. He gave study guides for the midterm and final, with the exact essay questions/IDs, so there was no reason not to get at least a B. The text book is unnecessary if you come to class. Read weekly books for sect

I really liked this class a lot. It does require a lot of reading. Basically, one book a week plus the textbook. But, the texbook reading is not really necessary so you can focus on the books which your two papers are based on. The lectures are at 1st difficult to follow but you get the hang of it. Overall the class was very intersting! I got A-!

The best history prof in the entire dept! he really knows what he is talking about, and makes the subject very interesting to keep everybody awake. talks VERY fast so bring a laptop to lecture! TONS of reading, but they were all interesting and usefull for the tests (even though you can get by w/o reading them). TA's grade really hard though.

If you're not used to very factual and detailed history, his lectures may be a slap in the face. He knows too much to the point that he's a little too sophisticated with his lectures if you're not used to the language of know-it-all historians. Often goes on tangents during lectures. Tests aren't bad; just know the general ideas and you'll do fine.

Very enthusiastic, engaging lecturer. I was ambivalent about European history before taking his class -- he conveys his enthusiasm well. Not too difficult if you do all the work/attend lecture, but he does require a ton of reading, especially for a lower div history class.

This guy is a beast. Who else can spit more info than the history channel on crack cocaine, and be three times as excited about it? The TA is good shot out to Andreas Agocs, he is really helpful if you talk to him.If you love old men getting so excited about the French Revolution that they nearly have a heart attack.I HIGHLY recommend Prof Marg

your grade literally depends on your ta. the papers, midterms, and participation so make sure you get a good one. lectures can be kind of dry and it's a lot of writing, i suggest recording him or bringing a laptop. overall the class is tons of reading and not too interesting unless you really love history but margadant isn't bad.
