Donna is indeed a tough grader. But she gives you an important base of your writing skill and it will be your asset for the rest of your uni life. Definitely not an easy A prof, but for me it was totally worth taking her courses and I love her. Make sure you visit her A LOT during her office hours so that she will like you and be easy on you.

A very sweet lady. I see a lot of derogatory comments on here, but the only negative thing that I can think of is that she is a pretty tough grader. However, she is one of the kindest professors that I have had the pleasure of having. Coates genuinely wants you to do well and if you reach out to her she will make sure of that!

Dr. Coates was easily my favourite professor this semester. She is incredibly knowledgeable when it comes to the topics we were learning about, and she is very easy to talk to. Her assignments are fairly easy, but she gives a LOT of feedback on your writing. If you are looking to improve your writing, she is a fantastic professor.

Very tough marker. If what you're writing about doesn't align perfectly with her opinion, she will give you a bad mark. Likes to ramble in a soft voice during lectures about completely irrelevant topics. Not English as much as it is SS. Very unclear, likes to call people out, disorganized to the max. Would never recommend except to my worst enemies

The lectures are pretty much useless and she is very tough on people. If you write something she doesn't agree with or is improper grammar, be prepared for her to write it on the board and explain how your sentences were terrible. Don't worry she doesn't use names most of the time.

She is extremely knowledgable and has a lot of interesting things to say. I only took this course because of her, I had no prior interest in the course. If you listen to her guidelines and ask her about your thesis before hand you will do great on the papers

She scared off most of the students within the first day. She is very honest of her expectations and the work you must put in. But if you do the class is very enjoyable and almost relaxing. Yes you have to do two presentations and she lets the students lead the class, but I found her marking fair and her door is always open for help.

This course had great promise, but the prof just sat back while the course was led by student presentations (reading group essays aloud). She lectured about Dieppe regardless of its relevance to the literature read. There are amazing Canadian authors, and Coates focused on the obscure and unknown.

The course was on female fiction writers which was of no interest to me, but I took this course because I heard Dr. Cotes challenged her students in the area of writing. I learned a great deal about writing from Dr. Cotes that I still apply today in business.

Coates is a one of a kind professor, with an interesting style and a way of going about her classes. YES, she is a hard marker, but your writing will improve vastly (mine did!). Participation will save your butt, because it will be easy to talk to her and figure out how to tweak your work towards that A grade. I had a great time with her! :)

I took introduction to short story with her in fall of 99, my first year. It was the most horrible experience in my entire university career. She is extremely hard and unreasonable marker. Even creative writing people disagreed with her. She abuses her power and harshly criticizes your work. 10+ yrs and still associate? No surprise!

TERRIBLE! She is impossible to understand as she rambles on and it's usually pretty quiet. ALSO such a hard marker....if you don't agree/understand what she thinks or wants...YOU ARE TOAST. I had to withdraw from this course to save my GPA. DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH HER!!!

Like most others said, she is a nice person but an extremely hard marker. Found her grading to be very discouraging. Expects you to know all these random facts about Canadian history and finds it terrible when you don't. Would love there to be more discussion on how to write properly, according to her standards.

Nice person, but not a great teacher. She really knows her stuff, but has problems getting it across. She's also an extremely hard marker. I would only recommend taking her class if you're already good at English, since she doesn't offer much help. She thinks you learn the "wrong" way to write in high school, but doesn't teach you the "right" way

Don't get me wrong she knows her stuff. But she isn't clear on what she wants for an assignment, spends most of her time talking about her personal life and always gets off topic. She is a really harsh marker especially if you are just coming out of high school. She doesn't help you at all and she grades more on structure than on content.

She is very passionate about what she teaches, unfortunately it is hard to keep up with her long enough to understand what she is saying. She is an extremely difficult marker, and very inconsistence in what she is looking for in assignments. She is a lovely lady, but a TERRIBLE prof.

Comment:
Marking was unfair and course structure made no sense. She made us write something, and the class before it was due, she told us her expectations which were unreasonable. Many had to rewrite the responses overnight. When she hands back assignments, her comments are illegible and her interpretation of the story is the only one that she accepts.

I found her to be an EXTREMELY UNFAIR marker. It was her way or the highway, and her way was extreme fuzzy and difficult to interpret. Her choice of books was interesting but when it came to writing the course papers, it was impossible to determine what she wanted out of them. Had to drop this class to save my GPA.
