Dr. Kertzer is a great professor. He is a little scatterbrained, but honestly one of the kindest profs at the U of C. He's funny, intelligent and willing to help in and outside of the classroom. Unfortunately though, he is particularly picky when it comes to writing. He noted my hard work and ideas, but always gave me extremely low marks.

Absolutely awesome and super funny. Attendance is required to do well on tests, but his notes are so interesting that it's worth it. Expectations are very fair as far as assignments go as well.

Kertzer's lectures are interesting, but I would highly recommend not purchasing the textbooks. The books were very pricey, especially because he insisted that they be purchased together with the online code, but he supplied the readings online throughout the course anyways. I never used the online code or the textbooks.

Dr. Kertzer is a great professor, he is funny (his humour is a bit old fashioned but funny nonetheless), his TA's are great also! His assignments are straightforward and easy to understand. Tests are based on class lectures so make sure you attend! He keeps things interesting! I really enjoyed class with him!

Wonderful professor - he really tries hard to make his students understand the materials. He is also quite funny. Spends time to correct your papers so that you know where you can imporove.

He really tries to get you understand theory and is full of helpful anecdotes etc. Classes can be a bit slow, but he makes the best of it and is really earnest in his presentation. He's really down to earth and helpful.

He is a very funny prof, who genuinely wants you to learn. He asks for students opinions, and is always ready for questions. Very nice guy. Marks reasonably, and wants you to do well.

What I like most about him is that even though he isn't religious, he treats religion with respect. If you're a "learn by association" kind of person, his teaching style is right for you. A nice, sweet man. However if you're not good at theory this isn't a class for you.

At first I thought this prof was useless...he gets off topic VERY easy, makes jokes only he gets, and is not good with technology, however, about a month into this class I realized that he is actually pretty funny (in his own way), he is very smart and his teaching and marking methods are fair. I would recommend him.

Hilaruos guy, good professor. a little scatter brained but totally funny. Kinda gets off topic easily, knows his stuff but is kind of boring to listen to at times. not a super hard marker but fairly hard.

If you think Dr. Kertzer is a bad professor, you should choose a different subject because you're awful at English. Great prof, very willing to help, brilliant man.

Taking into consideration that this class is hard on its own, Professor Kertzer doesn't help! He is not helpful at all. I'd gone to him numerous times for help and he only NODDED at me! He is also a very hard and rude marker, not very many helpful notes when essays come back!

I'm very surprised and almost offended by the negative comments about Dr. Kertzer! He is SUCH a nice person. His marking is (a bit) tough and I think it's because he has difficulty accepting other perspectives (generally because they're less informed than his own). He is a truly brilliant and caring prof. I highly recommend him.

Brutal in every possible way. Easily distracted, awful communication skills and a really hard marker. He definitely picks favorites and the rest of the students fall by the way side. Try to avoid his classes if possible.

Oh man, he rambles on and on, makes terrible jokes constantly, is clueless about technology and progresses very slowly through class. Just brutal. His name reminds me of Kurtz from "Heart of Darkness". How ironic! "The horror! The horror!"

Very cunning and witty old man. Odd fascination with Winnie The Pooh. Interesting fellow i would recommend but beware which TA you end up with cause in this class you spend just as much time with both.

Wow, comparative literature was a struggle. He took an assortment of amazing works and extracted nothing of interest. If you don't write well but enjoy wasting class time spouting uninformed opinions take a class with this guy. The only way to get a decent grade.

Lectures are repetative and it's hard to stay awake. He seems like a nice guy though (in a quirky kind of way). He's a BRUTAL marker.
