I honestly cannot believe all of the negative reviews written here about Professor Whalen. I can genuinely say that she is one of, if not the best professor I have had at MUN so far. If you do not apply the effort, you will not pass. It's as simple as that. Don't blame your own laziness on the professor if you happened to do poorly.

Comment:

Despite all the negative feedback on this prof, I would argue Doreen is an excellent professor. If you go to class and follow her specific requirements (which she simply tells you) you can do very well. Doreen gives great feedback, so you can really improve on the second paper and presentation. Doreen is excellent with responding to emails as well!

I have a lot of respect for Prof Whalen. I found her directions clear and precise. The whole intent of the course is to build good business presentation skills and I feel like she helped me achieve this. Don't know what the bad feedback is about. Took this course as an online course and it has been one of my favourite courses to date.

WORST PROF EVER. I am far from a bad writer and did horrible in her course. Hard marker and looks for very specific things that none of the other business 2010 profs asked for. If she is the only prof teaching the course at that time take it in a different semester.

Worst prof I've ever had. I took her this semester and had to drop the course. The first assignment was a research concept and only one person passed. After doing the midterm I felt really good about it, and ended up getting a 49%. Only one person passed that as well. Before dropping it, only 10 people remained in the course. It started with 30.

She is extremely rude. She is not clear about what she expects for assignments, and when you ask her to clarify, she treats you very disrespectfully, and is very discouraging. I would never recommend her ever. She is very unhelpful, and really should not be teaching a communication course. She is by far one of the worst profs I've had yet.

I would have to disagree with a lot of comments here. I had Doreen for Business 2010. Although, it is a very dry course that can be difficult to make interesting .However, you need to attend her classes. She takes attendance and uses it for your participation mark at the end of the year. She's a fair marker and a very helpful and kind lady.

She is very rude when she grades and discouraging when it comes to tests and papers. She is so specific on her assignment requirements she does not know what she is looking for herself. The classes are enjoyable but grading is bad.

Tough it out and make a solid effort in her class to participate, and she will respond well. She tells you in class exactly what she wants from you on assignments. I did not find that her grading schemes were any different than any other prof I've had. In fact, I found her to be an easier grader. She is extremely easy to get along with. Recommend!

I found her to be a nice lady but a really, really, difficult marker. She give schemes that does not completely match the textbook so you cannot win when writing papers. A little confusing in her marking also. Nice lady.

She was fair in her markings. Just study the slides, texts and do the assignments properly (follow her guidelines) and you'll do fine. She does give mandatory group work though, and you WILL be put in a group with at least two non english speaking students, so beware.

Teacher is a safe bet for this course.She teaches the material well and provides good feedback. The workload was easy and her marking is fair. Although it seems as if she gives an advantage to students who dont speak english as their first language.Course requirements were clear, but some of the assignments were a bit confusing on some topics.

She WILL fail you if you do not follow specific templates and outlines. Simply follow them and you will do fine. If you were to analyze the grades of her students, I think it would accurately separate the logical (more business minded) writers, from the artsy creative writers. Business communication is direct and to the point, just like Doreen.

I have to disagree with most of the comments here. Sure, she's a bit of a tough cookie, but follow her assignment guidelines and you'll do fine. Luckily there was only one exam, no one got an A on that and it was a bit tough to figure out what she wanted. Overall a helpful prof who will give marks to those who put in the effort.

Worst prof I've ever had. No consistency in marking scheme. She either likes you or doesn't, good luck if she doesn't. Expectations of assignments are very unclear and grade suffers because of it. Avoid her at all costs, seriously. What should be an easy course she makes very difficult and unenjoyable.

Busi2000, not the best person for a communications course. Her marking scheme was not clear. The course stresses "clear and concise" communications and that was not demonstrated by her at all. She likes to see her red pen marks all over your page even when it comes to cited works. Many lost marks were more opinion based than actual mistakes.

I took this course by distance. She is everything that should be expected in a distance prof. She participates in discussions, answers emails quickly, and is fair and understanding. If you do the work, you should get a good mark.
