Lectures are a bit dry but can be funny at times. The most difficult grader I've ever had, makes you really work, will give you harsh comments on papers. Loved briefing court cases -- probably ended up with over 50 briefs and notes. Recommend if you're interested in civil liberties and get ready to work because the class will kick your butt.

If you're at college to learn and be intellectually stimulated, she is the best professor you can have. If you're at college just to have fun, Professor James is not the teacher for you. She demands a lot of reading, a lot of writing. You will become a master in the subject at hand, but you'll have to work for a good grade. Best teacher at Conn.

james does a great job of trying to get her students to become better writers. her accent and manner is old school, but she's current and a wonderful asset to a person interested in working in the field. I took her class years ago, and am still reaping the benefits of taking her class. great teacher, great person.

Professor James was great. I think she allows for independent thinking, you just HAVE to back it up. The class itself can be a little dry, but the reading assignments are really interesting and nicely compliment the written assignments. I really enjoyed the course.

Professor James is old school. She's used to the days in which students realized they had to work hard to learn something. So if you're lazy and seeking entertainment don't bother with her. A good student will get a lot from her in terms of information and writing skills. Also, she is as good of an advisor as you can find. Gives tremendous advice.

One of the most helpful and genuinely interested professors I encountered at Conn. She tends to repeat herself, but her comments on political history and thought are always enlightening and her perspective is always memorable. As a transfer student to Conn coming from community college, I especially appreciated her willingness to go over drafts and work on improving my writing style and content. Take a course with her if you wish to learn to write like a pro

She lectures with wit and humor. However, you MUST turn in drafts with James. Also, don't think independently. Rewrite your papers exactly how she tells you to even if you disagree with her ideas. Whenever possible plagiarize her work as loves to read her own words in your paper. NEVER, EVER THINK INDEPENDENTLY. COPY HER SUGGESTIONS WORD FOR WORD.

God Awful professor. She is one of the worst in the gov department along with Tian and Borer. She is deadset in her ideas and if you do not regurgitate her opinions in your papers and turn in drafts you WILL NOT get a good grade. She made an interesting topic miserable.

James is my advisor. I do not think she's too liberal, and I am conservative. Lectures can be a little boring and she gives A LOT of reading and expects a lot of writing. She gave us 3 papers and each one averaged about 15 pages. I agree, HAND IN A DRAFT!

i had dorothy 5 times. she helped me improve my writing. her voice is low and monotonous, however, she knows her stuff. Further, she is a ranting liberal, and I love it. She is so nice. She insists on having coffee hours with her students. The best!
