I remember Rutherford well. I always enjoyed his classes best. He always let us re-write our essays in order to improve. Usually gave take home exams too. If he wasn't allowed by the powers that be, he simply told us what was on it so that we were ready. No tricks, no games. Good man. I heard the dept. has gone downhill in recent years. Too bad.

Top notch guy, you're right. If you care about bettering yourself, there's no one you'd want to have as a prof more than Rutherford. He lets the students be adults for a change instead of hounding them like children. Plus, he's the smartest guy I've ever met. And whoever said he goes out of his way for his students was right. He does. 100%

Rutherford is a GREAT guy, but his teaching techniques are somewhat poor. Unless the focus is on the French Revolution. If the class is a general 1st,2nd,or 3rd yr I find he knows so much he cant specify. Easy marks, lenient, easy exam. Somewhat bland, repetitive, and annoying. Although not a horrible prof, at the same time not a great prof.

I agree with the last comment. He's a different sort of man, certainly, but I always enjoyed his classes. Unless things have changed drastically since I went to LU, he is the best History professor in the department. He knows his stuff, and his classes are great if History isn't your major. He relates the material to today's world. Thumbs up!!

Rutherford is a history professor, owner of the most diverse magazine shop in Northern Ontario, a businessman, a huge supporter of the arts community in Sudbury, a social activist, a humanist.... how many people at LU, or anywhere, can you say that about? He is rare, combining intelligence, candour, and warmth. Take his class while you still can!!

By far the worst class I have ever taken that I was hoping to learn something in. His lectures if you could call them that consisted of him telling us about his trips to France and Russia which were interesting at first but not every class for 4 months. He is crazy which can be enetertaining but when you are paying $500 to take class not worth it.

I think I've taken every class he taught while at LU. The last comments are absurd. Must be written by people that can't think for themselves. As a student in his class I had total freedom to get out what I put in to my studies. John was always available and it was rewarding to come to class. As many LU hist. prof's retire, he's still standing!

An excellent professor; has a grasp of his area but even more he has a great understanding of related fields. Surprised no one has mentioned his sense of humour. He's a funny guy when he wants to be. I can recommend his classes to anyone interested in history or alternative viewpoints. LU is great!
