Professor Hecox was by far the highlight of my semester. Definitely makes you work for your grade- which will most likely be an A- max. Doug WANTS to turn you into a better writer, and will do so by providing useful criticism of your work along with having open communication to help you. I wish I could take him again. Can't have a better professor.

Comment:

Professor Hecox is the best of the best! This class was a little tough, but if you want to learn to write well, take his course. There are many opportunities for extra credit and no reason as to why a hard-working student wouldn't get a good grade. He took the time to get to know every student and genuinely wants everyone to do well.

Comment:

Try to take a different COMM200 professor if you can. His grading was totally arbitrary and my writing barely improved as a result of his class. He likes to make you think you suck at writing and then at the end of the semester will tell you your writing has improved just to make himself look good.

An absolute GIFT!! Professor Hecox is really tough and makes you work insanely hard, but it more than pays off at the end, because you learn a lot. I've improved so much as a writer. He's always willing to help his students out, and genuinely cares. He's also hilarious and managed to keep me awake throughout all 2.5 hours of the class.

This man is a gift to the school of communication. You can tell he really cares about his students and he works very hard to make sure people succeed, not just for the class, but so we apply our new skills to our writing pieces outside of class as well. There is a lot of homework, but he's super helpful. Would definitely recommend!

I took Writing for Comm w/ Doug a few years ago. As a graduating senior, his class stands out to me as one of the most worthwhile courses I took. His enthusiasm & humor made it fun, & his feedback made it matter. The skills I learned then are invaluable now as I apply for comm jobs (think: PR writing tests). One of AU's best professors, hands down.

I guess im the exception. I didnt find him funny but condescending though he thinks hes very funny. I felt his rubric for writing seemed a bit arbitrary and i dont feel i actually learned much. not a terrible class, but i often left feeling like i wasted time and feeling a little annoyed by him.

I have never had a professor who actually got to know his students personally. Professor Hecox is someone who can serve as both a mentor and professor. I am a much better writer due to this class.

Hecox is THE MAN. The class is a little intimidating, and he is a hard grader, but it all has a purpose. You 100% WILL be a better writer for taking this class. Such a caring professor that really encourages and believes in his students. I completely recommend this class if you're want to be a writer of any kind in the communications field.

His classes are both productive and & hilarious, & he is the first professor I've experienced that goes above & beyond when it comes to helping out his students. The best professor you may ever have. Be a good student and Doug could also be one of the best mentors you have for life! Highly, highly recommend. Had Doug for Writing for Mass Communications. Amazing professor and a great reference to have for the future. Really cares about his students and wants them to succeed. A rare find in the world of college professors - do yourself a favor and take his class. You will have to put in some effort but you will learn a lot and get a grade you deserve.

take this class. My writing improved so much. Hecox is a great professor...and hilarious! He's a comedian on the side. Very intelligent. I looked forward to his classes. The workload is really not that bad. It gained so much from this class.

Awesome professor. Real life knowledge. Hilarious. Lots of writing but not so much that you cant handle it. Grades hard but gives a ton of extra credit so in the end your grade is balanced out, you can't do bad in his class unless you really dont try to improve. He will make you a better writer. He is also hilarious.
