Comment:
Class was worth taking if you hate math. Cannon is very confusing and hard to follow. I learned the course material through reading and re-reading the book (he wrote it, so it's also a little confusing, but not as bad as when he's lecturing), as well as attending the weekly discussion hour where the TA explained everything really clearly.

PHIL224 was interesting - Cannon is an incredibly rambling professor, but clearly knows a lot about his subject (he literally wrote the textbook). The class is very confusing at times, but not terribly difficult.

I have taken 3 classes from Douglas Cannon. I find that he is sometimes hard to follow. He can sometimes be boring, and students tend to disengage, and you get what you give. He's beyond helpful in office hours and flexible with due dates if you ask. Be the one person who even looked at the reading and try to participate as best you can.

You won't understand anything he teaches. He goes off on tangents. But the discussion sections go over all homework and the aid is usually very helpful. Material is easy, he just doesn't describe it well. Ask questions from peers until you understand and it will be an easy class. Class taught from the book which he wrote, so you can't debate him.

Like others have said. He's a genius, but he doesn't communicate what he knows very well. You'll need your TA for this class. He is helpful in office hours though, and he has some hilarious mannerisms and ways of speaking.

Professor Cannon is a very nice guy and obviously very smart, but he teaches in a dry, uninteresting, old-fashioned way. He is only so-so at explaining concepts, especially difficult ones. TA was much more helpful. I was very interested in the material but if I wasn't the class would have been a total snooze.

What can I say? Professor Cannon is a brilliant man, but he has a hard time communicating what he wants the class to know, especially when it comes to exams. He knows his stuff but is tangential to the point where the lecture does not cover 3/4 of what it was supposed to. However, he is always available in office hours and loves to chat.

This was by far the worst class I have taken so far. He makes absolutely no sense and his lectures are either boring, incomprehensible or worse of both. I was initially interested in the subject, and the math core, but I regret taking the class as it was a frustrating waste of time.

A really nice guy who knows a lot about his subject; sometimes his lectures aren't the most clear, but if you have any troubles he's always really helpful and tries to explain things until you get it, so I'd take a class from him again for sure.

Least favorite class. I only took it because it fulfilled my math core but I would have been better off in stats or something. He talks in circles and seems to never make a point. I found myself leaving every class very frustrated.

Very unclear in what he expects out of you. He often goes on tangents that are irrelevant and he expects a lot with out teaching a lot. Probably the hardest seminar class at UPS. If this is your advising class, I suggest you change to a new one.

Hard class only because the material put me to sleep. Tableaux require you to do away with common sense and learn tedious rules. Theory of Meaning readings are dense and boring.

Check the room when you sign up. If it's in a lecture hall, prepare for his pacing, kind of distracting. He's fine in discussion and a brilliant logician (he wrote the book...). Feedback less than helpful and frustrating not really knowing what he required. Be very careful with tableaux. Not BAD, but NOT a teacher...better scholar than prof.

I took logic from prof. Cannon, I learned a lot in the class, in a kind of meandering roundabout way. If you don't catch something the first time hope you have good TA's to explain it a second time because prof Cannon is kind of hit or miss with his teaching. He does sound like the Sicilian from "The Princess Bride" though.

I would hope that a Professor of Logic would be articulate and concise. Unfortunately, I find Prof Cannon to be neither.

Doug is a nice guy but cannot teach. If you ask him a question, he won't give you a straight answer.. ever. No one knows how he grades, it seems like he doesn't read our papers. He is very disorganized and it took him 7-8 weeks to get our midterm papers back. I would not take a class from him again

I took Formal Logic (can't remember the #). The class was hard to follow and Doug got spacey pretty often. He's not a bad guy, though. Very helpful if you talk to him.
