Thoroughly enjoyed this class (as much as a non-English major can). I was a little worried as it was my first university writing class, but the first essay wasn't for marks so that we could get an idea of his marking. He's willing to meet with anyone for anything and gives excellent feedback. The stories he chose were surprisingly good. Great prof.

Great prof that made a dry subject bearable. Provided extensive feedback on every essay and cared about your development as a writer. The texts were interesting and prof Thorpe gave useful background and insight on all of them. Graded on 2 essays and 2 small quizzes.

One of my favourite profs! He is very easy to listen to and is crazy organized. He fully went through each assigned reading and made the incomprehensible understandable.

I was really happy with Prof Thorpe's gothic literature class. He makes all of the information clear and has interesting material for his lectures, not to mention he had a great sense of humour. He was fair with grading and had great feedback, not to mention had the perfect voice for reading gothic. Would highly recommend!

Great course - Thorpe was very funny and made sure to relate similar themes among works, which was really helpful for the final. We also had a lot of final exam prep, which was great. Overall a very good teacher!

Doug is hands down, biggest beauty i've ever met in my life. Critical theory is the driest material in the world but Doug made it interesting. He cracks jokes throughout the lecture and usually has a wicked opening to get everyones attention at the start of the class. I recommend Doug, essay's are tough but he helps out a lot.

Prof.Thorpe is my hero!He can take pretty boring and seemingly pointless material and make it interesting to understand.Very methodical in presentation, yet his sharp wit made the class laugh often and was a constant reminder of just how brilliant he is.Willing to help, never demeaning, and a pretty fair grader.I searched for another class w him!

He's a nice guy, but he's a damn hard marker with ridiculously high expectations, and the class is useless, even for English majors. His essay grading seems completely arbitrary, and he tends to stick purely to negative comments (which isn't necessarily bad, but it's nice to get a little positive reinforcement once in a while).

Considering that this is a full 6-credit class about mostly boring and useless information, Thorpe does a pretty good job of making it somewhat interesting. He is a tough marker and this is not a class for the average student. The only people I would recommend this to is English Majors.

Prof. Thorpe is great. Makes very dense subject matter make sense through extensive class discussions and his sharp wit. Going to class was a joy; I only wish I hadn't skipped as many classes as I did in the first term. If this were Ebay, I would give "Thorpedo" A+++++++++.

I wish I had gone more in the first semester!! Here is a prof that really explores material that is dull, incomprehensible and makes it seem fresh, immediate, vital! If you have to take theory take it from him! If you can take something you'd actually be interested with him, all the better. Would definitely take another class with him!!

Boring, tried to make things as obscure as possible, it seems the less you could understand, the better. Hated it, failed me miserably. Never again.

Lectures are really good, and he makes you understand the content that your reading very easily. He incorporates pictures, music etc. to help show the situation the author was writing in or to show more context about the characters. Over all really good prof. and worth going to class.

I enjoyed his class. He is very intelligent & picks great course material. Like all other English profs, however, he is an extremely eccentric person. He has crazy hair & needs a beard trim.
