He demands proof that you're a hard worker before he respects you. He seemed to hate us in first year but in second year, he's a bit friendlier. The labs are still bad, using convoluted outdated methods / computers (10 years old). Those labs are going to be the longest three-hour time periods of your life. But you've gotta do them.

He was our lab coordinator (Dr Pywell was our lecturer), and he was awesome. The computer labs sucked royally, but they were at least made somewhat interesting by the things Stan had to say. He knows his stuff and is willing to share his knowledge.

The workload is insane for first year. Stan will push you to your limits of understanding and if your math skills are not so good I would advise you to get some help. Its a fun class and I have yet to figure out how he remembered people's names so fast.

The best prof i have yet encountered. He tries to make the lectures interesting by using models where he can or giving interesting facts that you can't help but remember. The course load is similar to other first year natural science courses. I strongly advise anyone slightly interested in astronomy to take this class!

Fantastic prof. The best I have encountered in this college. Stan is extremely helpful and has a genuine interest in the success of his students and pushes them to work hard. Course material was well paced and planned. Great class to do well in, providing the effort is put in. Highly recommend.

Stan is, to put it simply, the man. Astronomy is not an easy class (a LOT of work, but the physics and math are fairly simple), but he really knows his stuff, his tests are fair, and his class is very well structured. I highly recommend taking his astro 101 class if you have any interest in astronomy!

Arts students popping in to this class to grab some free science credits are in for a rude awakening. The workload is not difficult (easy physics and definitions mostly) but it is plentiful. Stan is fair, willing to help, excited about his subject and narrates his topic with a high level of clarity.

as a prof, stan is "okay" if sometimes boring. notes were fill-in-the-blank. HOW does he learn everyone's names so quickly?? creepy. i DO NOT recommend taking ASTR 101 due to passing interest or to fulfill the science requirement for people doing humanities degrees. it is a DIFFICULT class with high work load and lots of math.

I failed this class! But it was fun. He tries to make it all understandable, and is a good proff. It should be taken in summer session, because it is like a full time job (and the labs are cold in Oct/Nov). The labs were great, organized, useful, they teach alot, and you get hands on experience with telescopes. Totally good proff!

Way to much work for a first year class. Labs + weekly assignment + term paper + group oral presentation + 'optional' assignments.

I love the comment "expects a lot out of students" as if that's a bad thing. Yes, he does expect a lot out of students and he puts in a lot of time and effort himself. Don't take the class if you're looking for fluff. That is not what Stan is

brutal class! not recommended unless you are incredibly bored and have nothing but time! if taking other courses, be prepared to see you marks plummet because 80% of your time will be spent atop the physics building!!

Stan knows what he is talking about and is not a bad lecturer. However, for a 1ST YEAR CLASS there is way too much work. If this was the only class you were taking then great, but if you are taking any other Science or math class then forget it!

Stan's the man! He is very knowledgeable in the subject he teaches. Astro 101 was not a lot of work (I don't know why the people below are complaining). Astro 212, although not that difficult, is a lot more work than 101. And by a lot, I mean A LOT!
