Comment:
Don't take this class and any his lecture, just don't. If you want to learn OS, goes to other universities or study online. Any of them is better than Mr. Makaroff. And I don't think he is qualified for teaching in University. All the teaching material he posted on the blackboard are from online, hehe If you want to learn OS, don't come to UofS.

If your partner doesn't finish their part of the assignment he will tell you its your fault for not covering them. If something is corrected wrong on the midterm its your fault for not explaining it better. He is actually delusional and would rather be an ass on the forums then fix his content.

He is fine in lectures and in person but does not come across well on the forums. The assignments were incredibly long and vague. They had little to do with the lecture and test material, requiring you to commit a large amount of time to the assignments that does not at all translate into knowledge about the tests. Feels like taking two classes.

Knowledgeable and interesting lectures, however the assignments are hard, long and very confusing. He's good to talk to outside of class, and willing to entertain questions. The class overall is just very hard.

Vague lecture style like he's talking to himself, very little written notes. Argumentative and dismissive on the forums, extremely unclear assignment specs which are graded EXTREMELY harsh, refuses to clarify details. Very hesitant to give exam marks to anything that isn't 100% correct. Expect to spend all week working to get over 50% in the class.

I stopped going to class just before the midterm(skipped it), and dropped after I got A1 back; It took about 4 weeks from handin. His assignment specs are vague; beware of not handing in something he didn't ask for. Although I may not be the most credible source as I didn't stick the class out, know that taking 332 with Dwight is a huge workload.

If here allows 0 I would definitely give him 0. Terrible lecture, assignment itself not that bad, but he tried his best to make the extremely long hw even worse, forced you spend time on meaningless stuff. If you get 60 in your exam, you already did quite good. Avoid him and take any online OS course instead, you'll learn much better

Seems like Dwight's first time teaching this in a long time. Some things he wasn't too knowledgeable on, but he would admit so and expect you to know a lot on it. There was so much content (and he knew it) that he didn't test too detailed. Assignments were tough, but graded fair as long as you legit tried. I did about 12% better in this than 332.

Gives unspecific instructions while expecting specific results. Is quicker to blame 70 students for not getting something right than place even partial blame on himself for not being explicit enough.

He gives the most interesting assignments I have ever done. They correctly model the real world: an old codebase you have to learn how to use, unclear requirements, unreasonable deadlines, and no valuable feedback for your hard work. But, if you work at them you gain very valuable knowledge that will stick with you for the rest of your life.

Assignments are self-contradictory, ambiguous, and extremely long. Marking is effectively passfail depending on whether you match his reference implementation precisely. This is nearly impossible due to confusing, incorrect, or entirely missing instructions and documentation. Expect to work 30+ hours per week for a minimal pass.

Comment:
Dwight's assignments are awful and his attitude is even worse. He expects perfection from his poorly constructed assignments, and then does not mark and return assignments and exams in a timely fashion. He has 1 set of standards for students, and another for himself. I did dual-bach degrees, and he was the worst Prof. I had during that time.

"procrastination will end you" should be on the syllabus a 100 times in size 48pt font. His assignments are an exercise in frustration as you struggle to cope with horrible documentation and ambiguous specifications. But, Dwight is a great lecturer, really knows his stuff; recommended if and only if you want to learn a lot and want little free time

Supposedly one of the most difficult classes in the dept. The assignments are ridiculously long and difficult, but he's willing to help with them, but any sort of procrastination will end you. Tests are quite fair, there's just a LOT of info to know and retain. Material was great, just there is a lot to know and do. Text was quite useful for tests.

Really good teacher, I liked him a lot. He gave tough assignments but they were very helpful. Follow his instructions to a tee because if you don't you'll have to resubmit your assignment because it doesn't work with his script. Exams were really hard but the sample midterms were extremely helpful, since they're almost all exactly the same.

Very interesting course. Assignments are designed to take a lot of time, to let you make mistakes. More challenging than it is rewarding, but it is rewarding. Makaroff has energy in his lectures which is nice, but can be very cryptic and demanding.

Genuinely one of the worst teachers I've had throughout university. Literally rude, makes it known he thinks we are terrible at programming, unconstructive criticism (this has serious issues). Refuses to go out of his way for anything (if his script doesn't run your program flawlessly he can't be bothered to look at it). AVOID AVOID AVOID.

Dwight is a fantastic person to speak with and ask for help. Unfortunately, his assignments have proven to be the most ambiguous, frustrating, and time-consuming work of my university career.
