In retrospect I wish i had taken more classes with him instead of wasting my time learning nothing. His class was indeed a challenge, but you will not find a more passionate professor at SDSU. He does actually care about students who care about academics. I think he is a wonderful person. He expects perfection, and why shouldn't he?

Above all else, he is the only teacher since 7th grade that inspired me. He truly cares about what is being taught. He WANTS his students to learn and to be engaged, and to ask questions. You will either love or hate this man. In my case, I LOVE the guy. One of the BEST teachers at SDSU, it is TRULY a shame he is retiring.

Only by studying for a solid 18 hours for the final did I get a C in his class. I focused on learning the stories for the first exam, but then he mostly wanted exact names repeated back. So, for the 2nd exam, I memorized names--but then he changed the format and wanted stories compared. So, for the final, I memorized EVERYTHING.

He has extensive criteria for term papers, quizzes, etc. I got an F on a quiz for writing in pencil when directions say ink only. He will call you out if you miss class or have the wrong answer. Go to EVERY class, participate every day, go to office hours, read the material. If you can follow directions you will do great.

He is dedicated to his class, and he does try his best to make the best out of each session. However, his lecture does not have that chemistry to draw the students into the greatness or the depth of the work that he's lecturing on. He does have quizzes in class, but he lets you know before hand what he's gonna ask through emails.

Very interesting teacher who clearly loves his work. Really into what he teaches and teaches all texts really well. Only difficult part is being able to keep up with the reading when its due and being able to analyze texts, especially poems, in depth. Overall, Genovese is probably one of my favorite teachers from this semester.

3 hard exams determine your grade. lectures are almost impossible to follow. i thought i just don't get mythology but the way he tests is stupid memorization and not knowledge. probably a smart guy but just needs to reanalyze the presentation of the material. whats more important memorizing the names of gods and artists or learning the concept

Had a summer school class with him. He stated nobody would get an A. Maybe 1 or 2 B's, a few C's and the rest D's a F's. During the final he blew up, and I mean blew up, on a student after she asked a question. Made the poor girl cry. I learned alot but I would NOT take this guy in ANY summer or winter class.

Arrogant. Needs to learn a thing or two about treating people with basic human dignity and respect, instead of just making fun of people who don't measure up to his "standards." He should educate himself on mental illness-maybe then he won't be so quick to pick on a student who has obvious mental issues in front of a classroom full of people.

Yes, he is challenging, he is mean sometimes, too. I almost failed the class, but I took more from a semester in his class then I did after four years at SDSU. I still quote him. Stop being babies and use college as a means for learning. Plus he is handsome and well groomed, wears a nice cologne as well...I think i have a crush on him!!

Definitely a challenging professor. He wants his students to use their minds so he'll never directly give you an answer, that can be frustrating. He grades pretty hard, and expects a lot. Participation counts and you must see him during his office hours. Go to office hours frequently!! This class might be more unstructured, but can be interesting.

Extrememly intellegent, somewhat intimidating. Truly wants you to do your best, and has no tolerence for stupidity. Elitist? Oh yeah. He's a classicist, what do you expect? Commands repsect. Has a dry sense of humor, as long as you don't piss him off. If you are a hard worker and can follow instructions, you'll be alright in his classes.

Great teacher, but does not put up with BS. He told students not to talk during tests and one did, so he trashed the guy's test! It is pretty simple to follow instructions. He also reqired that each student make an appointment and come to his office to talk with him for 15 min during the semester, or lose a letter grade. Amazing how many people I knew blew it off. I learned a lot in his class, which is saying something for a class of over 100 people. Tough but fair!
