Comment:

I took multiple courses with Jewinski, Canadian Poetry being the best experience, Modernism the worst. While interesting to listen to, some may find it irritating and confusing how he circles around points. He has somewhat high expectations, but he is EXCEEDINGLY helpful if you make the effort. I have mixed emotions, because he really is a good guy

He is a hilarious man and his lectures are entertaining yet he marks very hard and refuses to give coherent or consistent feedback and expectations. He also did not give final essays worth 40% back until we did the exam and since the course is based off of 3 marks I had no idea what to expect. He did not improve when I went to his office hours.

His lectures are engaging and humorous and keep you on your toes but tend to get really repetitive to the point where you are tired of answering the same questions over and over. He does mark your assignments but I think he grades them based on attendance in class instead of content. The course outline was not very clear.

I have taken 3 classes and a seminar with Dr. J, and upon reading through the comments list I can't disagree with a lot of them. Though his Socratic method is sometimes incomprehensible in the beginning, I have ALWAYS remembered his lectures because of his constant repetition: anyone who took EN398 will remember why Barbie went shopping :)

"The" best teacher I've ever had. Very helpful if you go see him in office hours. Never confusing, but sometimes repetitive in lectures (to make a joke or make a point), but interesting if you pay attention. As a human being, he's just a genuinely great individual.

I applied to take a creative writing course with Dr. J, and he ended up accepting anyone who applied. I never got my final story back from him (worth 30%) because he lost them, and when I asked him about it he gave some rambling excuse. EASY marker...will give you a B for having a pulse (after all he doesn't mark assignments).

Sometimes a difficult teacher to understand, his Socratic method oftentimes leaves students reaching for a complex answer when really a simple one will do. Occasionally vague to the point of incoherence, Dr. J tries his best to engage his students and help them learn. A student taking his class would be wise to pay attention and be active in class.

Dr. J is a wonderful professor. There will always be people who disagree, but as long as you are willing to work (and hello... that is the point of university) you will do fine. He is very approachable and fair, but also believes that a student needs to be serious about their studies - which is why he may seem harsh. Do the work, get the grade. :)

Dr J. is incredible. Really cares about his students. to do well you have to go to every class AND LISTEN. If you don't like tangents don't go, but for anyone who says the tangents are useless it's because they AREN'T LISTENING. It's all important, if you're paying attention its easy to do well. Awesome.
