The lectures were non-stop and very detailed. Due to the nature of the information being taught, it can be beyond difficult, but it will enhance the way you analyze and look at every question you ever have. Definitely worth the grueling effort.

Comment:
This is a difficult class with a professor who has taught it for over 30 years. There are only 5 homework assignments, but expect to invest 20 or 30 hours into each assignment. The unit exams are difficult and hard to study for. However, the final exam is cumulative and therefore manageable. He is a board blocker. Take notes, it helps on homework.

Expect to spend up to 20 hours per week outside of class on the material. Lamagna is good, but he will not hold your hand. Homework is difficult. Test are difficult. The textbook is not very good. But the TA's are very competent and can assist if you're lost.

You need to put in work to pass this class, homework will be due every day. Has a 15 point increment for grades (85 is an A-, 70 is a B- etc.) which makes up for the difficulty of subject matter. Allows curves your grade if you grades get better as the semester goes on. Stay on top of the homework and study for the exams and you'll do fine

He teaches some pretty interesting problems you won't learn in a traditional math class. Grading is pretty hard, and expect to spend a lot of time studying for this class. Try to take this class early (because it will truly tell you whether you want to take the BS route or the BA route). Overall, a pretty good professor.

The class is a lot of work and covers many different topics in a short period of time but Prof. Lamagna is very clear and usually gives really good examples and explanations. He has a sense of humor too and tries to make the class laugh once in a while. The TA was very helpful if you have any questions about the homework.

Good teacher. Extremely intuitive teaching style, interesting puzzles. You should take his classes if you like math. Not the hardest grader either, so totally survivable.

Tough professor, but one of the best that you can learn C.S. from, especially from a mathematical perspective and at URI. Class is mandatory although entertaining. Furthermore, he motivates you to learn the course material and redo tests. You'll be challenged but in the end be glad you did even though you may not do as well as you would like.

May be strict in terms of academic policies and test grading, and homework discussions can be a two-edged sword, but motivates you to attend class and learn the course material. Also has a great sense of humor. You will love his class and learn a considerable amount of information from him even though you will find it hard to get a good grade.

Hardest CS class I've taken anywhere, including at Brown. Homeworks took an obscene amount of time. But it also took being pushed that hard in order to really dig deep to find solutions. It's a very hard class, but you'll grow considerably by going through it. If you're serious about CS, take this class, but don't take any other hard classes.

Class is HARD. But this is a GOOD HARD. Dr Lamagna will challenge you, and you will either rise to the challenge and overcome, or you you will fail. You can reject the value of the challenge and take a BA or go into a different field, or you can take the bull by the horns and have class with the only professor who ever truly challenged me to excel.

Ridiculously hard class. Despite understanding what he says, the homework doesn't match up to what he just said. He'll make you redo exams as homework to find your errors, but if you don't understand what you did wrong it's pointless. Almost made me give up on my degree.

I'd much rather have a root canal while in the middle of a colonoscopy than sit through one more of his classes. The material is extremely difficult and is made only worse by the fact he does not teach it, he tells it to us. The class would be a bit better if he would just get out of the damned way of his own writing on the board. I hope I pass.

The poster boy for cruel professors at its best. Takes pride in putting his students through hell as if his class is the only one that matters for the entire semester you have him. Outdated, explains nothing, his TA should be teaching the class not him. If you see him spit on him and buy him a new wardrobe while you're at it.
