We wrote a short paper each week but it was always about whatever part of the discussion resonated with you. Lots of class discussions and debates.

Duarte is the man: erudite, cool, and welcoming. This class taught me important lessons about how to approach curriculum development and how to think about my role as a future teacher. In order to do well, you just have to read, work thoroughly with the material, and know when to let go and improvise.

Duarte is by far the best professor I've had at Hofstra so far. His class was one of the rare ones that actually teaches you lessons that will stick with you forever, especially through your experiences of teaching & learning, & enlightens you in the field of education. I loved everything about the class & him. would take him again in a heartbeat

He's such an interesting person I would recommend taking his class just for that. He likes to hear what the students have to say and if he can't do so through class participation, he will do it through hw. He likes to assign a blackboard post frequently, or every class. You can just ramble on in the post but make sure you won't mind it read aloud.

Such an awesome human being! Loved him! He made every discussion enjoyable and fun, and attempted to explain philosophy. If nothing else, you'll hear some great stories. TAKE HIM IF YOU GET THE CHANCE! Participation is key. Assignments stopped half way through the semester. You get to choose which questions to answer on the final.

I learned a lot from taking Professor Duarte's section of Culture and Expression. He gave us free reign on the multiple, but short papers. I typically wrote argumentative pieces, and appreciated that he provided comments on my writing instead of merely just grading it. Class discussions might be hard to follow if philosophy isn't your thing.

Loved the class, especially Duarte's attitude towards philosophy of education. Just appreciate his quirkiness and the class will be fun. He kind of states he doesn't really care about the individual lives of the students, which is fare but he also would make an effort to see musical performances on campus to support his students.

y'all are trippin prof Duarte was really nice and he's sort of scatter brained but his heart is in the right place. If you want to do really well in this class just skim the readings he assigns and participate. Discussions usually get off topic anyway so just go with it and stay involved.

Papers are due every other class and no set outline or format is given for them. If you aren't too interested in philosophy don't take his class. He makes honors college completely unenjoyable.

I took this class online. It was a really good class to take online. His lectures were actually interesting to listen to. I thought this class would be boring and pointless but I can see how it helps you as an educator. Nice guy. Easy grader. Assignments are kind of annoying but they aren't very difficult. Easy class!

great professor and an even greater guy. he gives a lot of assignments, but none of them are very long and he's not a hard grader. mostly they're really interesting and creative instead of boring papers or responses. smart guy with a lot to say, and we have great class discussions. he'll force you to share your work which is a little nerve-wracking

Papers due every other class. He is entertaining in class, but the papers are unrelated and his help is useless. He changes the actual assignments multiple times and leaves the class confused. His grading is ok, but the amount of papers he gives is ridiculous, and he takes forever to grade them. don't take this class. just don't.

Professor makes you think. He's really good if you're willing to think differently about things. I really really enjoyed this class and while some may think that he has rigid ideas, I disagree. He lets you express anything you want as long as you are able to do it well.

I agree with the previous reviewer (8/30/10)...I even think I know who he is. I saw Duarte flog this poor guy in front of the entire class just for challenging him. It was despicable, and completely uncalled for.

Comment:
Beware this man. He makes himself out to be an open-minded proponent of free thought in the classroom, but it?s just a facade. He has a rigid view of what you should think of the readings he assigns. If you indulge him & agree with all of his opinions he will love you. But challenge him or criticize his beloved philosophers & you?ll feel his scorn.
