As much as I personally dislike the man, I learned a lot from his class. He is definitely immature and somewhat petty, but if you don't mind doing some work and actually learning, his classes are worth taking.

Dr. DeClair is a great professor, and a great person. He is extremely intelligent. I won't disagree that he is pompous, but he knows he's smart. Anyone who says he doesn't care about his students didn't care about his classes. He merely expects a lot out of you. And he doesn't waste time on students who don't care. He weeds out the apathetic ones.

Knowledgable about the French far right beyond the scope of most undergrads comprehension or interest, otherwise that not incredibly challanging. I admire his dedication to his students, he really is passionate about what he does. Although occasionally immature, that can always be manipulated to ones advantage, as his ego is easily stroked. Biggest benefit to his class is the books he chooses, while he may choose 5 different books they are almost always well worth it.

I have taken just about every class he teaches, and still respect his knowledge and dedication to challenging students. The key is to do some independent reading and talk to him outside of class. He really does want to see students be successful, but he will not just hand you an A. Read the Times!
