Comment:

He's a good guy who loves to teach students about music. Don't take it to early Friday morning because he tends to blast music samples. Most people who think the class is hard spend the entire lecture with their eyes closed. Take notes, do a minimal amount of studying and you'll pass easily.

Very dry lectures. The class itself was extremely easy. He does grade on attendance. Other than that there are a few quizzes and 2 papers (only one of which is graded). Very easy course but very boring.

You have to understand that music teachers are set in their ways, so is Dr. Soehnlen. Don't make them angry. Otherwise, great professor. He is a very nice man who loves what he does. Pretty easy class if you've had experience with music, otherwise it may be a bit difficult.

I had him for a MUS 117B class as well. He is a smart guy! He knows his stuff!! If you are the type of person that likes to not go to class then I wouldn't take him!!! YOU HAVE TO PAY ATTENTION!! If you don't then you will not do well on tests!!! He only has 3 and they are easy! Make sure you always buy the textbook too!

Very easy class. Prof would play classical music and would play the piano for classes. Only 3 tests the whole year and they were very easy. Just pay attention to what he says because he will tell you everything that will show up on the tests. Study the music on your own and the listening part of the tests is very easy.

Hard class, decent teacher. I recommend taking a classical class over non-western music, very boring and dry. Dr. Soehnlen is a good professor, will answer questions and help best he can, but class is still very difficult

I really really enjoyed this class! I don't understand why students leave such unnecessary comments. He is knowledgeable, helpful, and enjoys what he does. The class is only difficult if you do nothing to help yourself. Pay attention, ask questions, and you'll be fine.

Awful. Easily the worst class and professor I've had. He has no passion for the material, is dull as can be, his exams are difficult, and he treats students like children. This guy needs to hang it up and walk away. Just horrible. Even the music majors in my class hated it.

I am a music ed. major and i have to take this class. I have taken it once and failed because it was so boring. If you do not have to take this class DO NOT TAKE IT!!!! It is so boring and not easy. I did not learn anything from this class but i am taking it again this semester unfortunately :(

I can't believe he is actually teaching. Do Not Take This Class. The only way I made it through this class was with friends. The professor is monotone, he reads from the book and think he knows what he is saying, and he yells if you dont read you notes even though the test is not until 2 weeks away. Save yourself and take something else

DO NOT TAKE HIM! I was in band for a few years in high school and thought that would help but nooo! Attendance is important, you get points for that. His tests are not very long, maybe 20-30 questions, no extra credit, and very hard. He plays music and talks at the same time and you cant even hear what he is saying. again, do not take him.

I'd agree with lots of previous comments. I love music, but this class was more painful than fun. His microphone can drive me nuts if it's not working (it pops). I don't appreciate being treated like a high school student under adult supervision- I'm a junior, and responsible. So, class stuff wasn't too hard, but I have a background in music.
