I didn't find her lectures very interesting and always left feeling like I hadn't learnt anything. Sometimes the worksheets and practice was helpful but other times just another thing to worry about. I liked her one on one much better but I actually did use the textbook quite a lot reading on my own and studying. The class itself wasn't hard.

Completely disorganized. Boring lectures. Pointless breaks halfway through class. Sucks the fun out of science.

Comment:
Her lectures are quite boring and they don't really help you understand the material. She never really answers any questions and if you go to her office hours for clarification, she gives you this look that basically tells you to go away. She was just rude and yet didn't even answer my questions properly. Not a good class...

Comment:
Her lectures can be very boring and confusing, and many people skip many of her lectures. Although you will lose participation marks for not going to class, Hinze posts lecture slides online which are a great way of studying. I didn't read the textbook at all; I only used it for the access codes. All the important info is on her lecture slides.

I didn't like her lectures at first because it's quite dry and boring. However, as the term progressed I got more engaged and it really helps to sit in the first few rows as it motivates you more. Her lecture slides are really nice to study off of before midterms and tests (friends from other sections asked to see them). I had a good experience!

I very enjoyed the lectures - she is caring and tries to make sure that we both understand the material and feel comfortable in the subject. She is inspired about biology and inspires me whenever I go to class. Presentations are quite important supplement to what you read in a book but if you have questions, she'll be more than happy to answer any.

She's very nice and tries to be helpful, but classes have unclear direction, and more class time is spent dilly dallying than actually going over the course material. The course requires launchpad, but don't take tie progress on launchpad tests as an indication of what areas you need to study for unit tests or course notes as a reliable study guide

Professor Hinze isn't the absolute best professor (I recommend Barker) but the class wasn't impossible. Her lectures aren't that helpful but her slides are great. Her tests are not easy though. You need to actually understand the concepts. I recommend using clutchprep to pass. They really helped me out

Comment:
Prof Hinze was one of the better 4 profs for Biol 112 this semester. I (and 99% of other students) took the lectures as a joke and a great way to socialize because there's a lot of useless (I mean, useless) group activities. Her lecture slides are absolutely amazing. They are all you need to do really well in the course. Overall, would recommend.

Dr. Hinze covered the basics of what you need to know in class, but the tests are not like high school bio where you can memorize everything. If you try, you will be disappointed. We were allowed a page of notes for exams, didn't even look at mine. The questions were mostly concept and reasoning based, and LONG.

She REALLY cares about her students. If you need academic or life advice, she's 100% there for you. She's genuinely a really good person but a somewhat ineffectual lecturer. The presentation slides for this class are EXCEPTIONAL, so if you get her, you'll be fine if you read these and the text. Study, the class is no joke, but it's doable.

When I first came to Professor Hinze's class, I had read the ratings on here and was fully prepared to give her the benefit of the doubt that the students were lazy, didn't care etc. etc. I was sorely disappointed. Professor Hinze manages to combine both ineffective use of class-time with befuddling or entirely missing explanations. Get out.

Extremely difficult course; she didn't teach it very well. A lot of memorization involved, although not much of it came to use during the real exam as it was mostly theory/concept-based. The final exam was a mess. Tip for upcoming students: read the required sections in the textbooks as many times as you can.

The class requires you to go to class as participation and classwork is included in the grade. Her lectures put me to sleep and the questions did not make any sense because she would ask that we try something we've never seen before we even learned it. Questions asked in class were never answered.

She was very helpful and friendly. I am glad that I had her as my first uni bio prof. Highly recommend taking her section. (Comparing to the other sections which I had dropped in a few times, Ehleen was more interesting and she KNEW what she was talking about.)

Great professor, takes real interest in seeing her students well. Seeing the other ratings is kind of appalling.. she's always been very sweet. However she does sometimes end the clicker questions abruptly. Often gave exam questions in class prior to the tests.

I was shocked when I saw even remotely good rating for Prof. Hinze. Her lectures are pretty average, except for the fact that she could answer about 10% of student questions on the spot. When I had concerns or difficulties, she was blatantly rude and lacked understanding. To top it off, attendance is mandatory. Avoid this prof!

Very difficult course. Lectures, tests and the textbook were not very related. Dr. Hinze is not the best at explaining difficult concepts to students but she does answer some questions well. She let us leave lecture early sometimes, which was kind. Only take this course if you need to or if you really love biology.
