Comment:
Took down my paper to very low level because I expressed opinions that in some ways contradicted his, and had some very minor spelling mistakes. When I tried to get him to help me with what went wrong he basically insinuated that I hadn't bothered reading the comments on my paper. I am an A average student in this field.

Fair marker. Facilitates fantastic class discussions. I enjoyed almost every story we read. He repeats things enough that you can zone out/do other homework and then still know what's going on. (I'll let you decide if that's good or bad)I thoroughly enjoyed his class, would take it again. His voice is soothing. Weird, I know.

Comment:
Nice enough guy but he should be teaching high school, and marking grad theses. The mandatory attendance is a bit frustrating since he doesn't say anything that isn't already published in the Coles Notes of the book. Your ticket to success is to turn any shred of independent thought and just repeat whatever he says in your writing.

Comment:
Professor Levy has to be taken on his own terms. He is sincere, chooses EXCELLENT texts, and wants students to learn. He does use a teaching style that values repetition and careful definition of terms/ideas. Thus, classes move slowly and he may appear condescending. Still, he is warm, has an archaic charm and LOVES to read. Mixed bag course.

I felt like he knew what he was talking about, unfortunately he talked like he was from the 18th century. He's a very slow speaker and his discussions move at a very slow pace; it's hard to focus/stay awake sometimes because he talks at about 2 miles an hour.

Comment:
Condescending and unhelpful. An extremely hard marker, who wants you to explain every little detail. Does not listen to what you have to say, or let you even finish speaking before he jumps to his own conclusions. Will repeat the same point five times over in class, without really going any deeper into it.

Comment:
Would not have shown up for lectures if attendance wasn't taken every class. Lectures more like chapter summaries repeated over and over and no class participation or individual thought was encouraged. Gives low marks on essays unless you repeat everything he said in class, expecting everything to be fully explained, even the obvious.

hardest teacher i have ever had! problems included: too much (boring) reading, assignments that on the surface appeared easy but were marked super hard, lack of allowing individual thinking - basically regurgitate what he says in class if you want a decent grade. i will be avoiding taking another class with him and encourage others to do the same!

His class is boring and repetetive (one short story after another). not very conductive to other student viewpoints. condescending

Comment:
Levy is an extremely biased teacher. Most of the comments up here are true. His lectures are redundant and simplified while he expects comprehensive written work that is identical to his theories in class. He does not care about students success or independent thought and is condescending. He interrupts you&does not listen. Highly unrecommended.

really good prof... REally explains his ideas on the texts. You need to go on these for the midterm, but the essay and final search for your own take (but perhaps good to include his viewpoint). I really liked his understanding of what is English lit- no critical essays or theories, just looking into the text. Very nice.

Prof talked down to us; spelled out words such as "irony" and "imagery". Although stories read were interesting, he was very repetitive. Did not offer much regarding class discussions.

It's unfortunate that we only read short stories such as The Lottery and The Cask of Amontillado, but it's an alright course. He seems like a nice guy and encourages class participation, however he relies on it a bit too much. He's a decent prof.

Lectures were pretty boring-- you could read the novels on your own. It's hard to know what he wants on tests, papers and exams. I don't know anyone who was able to get higher than a B+ in this class.
