Nellis is easily the best prof I've had in four years at UBC. Fair marker, anyone who says otherwise isn't trying hard enough. Very funny also, by far the most engaging lecturer, no online notes/pps, but so interesting and illuminating! Note: Even if he doesn't assign it, buy his book for the final, as it covers the exact material so thoroughly!

He and his horrible TA chatted during the whole final. I liked Nellis, but not so much his choice of sycophantic nancy boys who are SO ignorant! Entertaining lectures - didn't really learn anything I didn't know about American history. POssibly he needs to retire for real.

Comment:
UBC's HIST department continues to prove substandard. Nellis is clearly a sweet guy and passionate about the subject, but fails to clearly convey materials to students in an interesting, structured way, nor integrate theory. Class felt like a never ending narration of a disparate and discombobulated information. Learned more from text than lectures

Nellis is simply the best prof I've ever had. Not the easiest marker, but his lectures are a lot of fun and he's very charismatic.

LOVE Nellis, wish he taught a class on life :) If you do one thing at UBC take one of his classes, even if you don't like American History (I didn't) He's so well liked that his classes are full of students who are repeats

Oh my God, this guy is sooo funny. He tells random stories and goes off on rants, but he's really a great guy. Since he tells these stories, the class is a bit unorganized, but if you read the textbook, then that's pretty much all you need it know. He is a fairly hard marker, but I managed to get a B, so it wasn't that bad. Take his class!!

Great guy, very enthusiastic and funny. Really loves what he is teaching BUT please read the text and keep it as your bible for the course. He jumps from one topic to the next and you can barely keep track of what he is talking about. Read your text as your notes won't be very clear or understandable after class. But great person.

By far the best prof at UBC! He is funny and engaging and will have you laughing as much as you are learning. His assignments aren't hard nor are they marked unfairly. Take anything with him while you still can! (He is retiring soon)

by far the most engaging, enthusiastic, comical and interesting prof i have been taught by. gets carried away and wanders off topic, but if you keep up his notes are good enough to write the exams with - which are very simple, no tricks. made me excited to learn even after 6 hours of previous class.a mentor if there ever was one. cheers nellis!

He is such a funny guy! However, he does get side tracked, a lot. Class is pretty much a waste of time. He tests you on the terms that he puts up on the board during class, but it's hard to take notes on them. I just type them into wikipedia during class. Take an evening class with him; he lets you off a good 40 - 60 minutes early. Decent marker

Strayed off topic during every lecture, then tested on lecture notes. Impossible to keep track of what was important because he was constantly jumping from topic to topic. Marks hard on what he THINKS he's stressed in class. Can't say I learned a thing in his course because there was never any discussion - just sit, listen and TRY to take notes.

Nellis is a really great prof. He's a hard marker, but he's very helpful, and wants students to succeed. Funny stories, a great sense of humor. Plus, he didn't go to university until later in life, so he understands that there's more to life than school!
