Loved 355 with Eric Roth! He explained concepts well and didn't over complicate things. His notes were super clear, no assigned readings, midterm and final only off of his slides, and good group/class discussions. Dr. Roth approaches HIV/AIDS from a statistically point but acknowledges and discusses the importance of qualitative studies as well.

Love Roth! His classes are a walk in the park if you do the readings and put effort into your final paper. I've taken 3 courses with him and its always graded in the same format: 1 or 2 midterms, participation, final paper and final exam. Very passionate and knowledgeable in his areas of study HIV + statistics.

Almost always let out class early. Very few practice problems. Your grade is based on VERY few questions. Very very intro statistics. Like kindergarten. Was rude to a few students but helpful enough if you talk to him. If I could do it again and if you care about actually using this stuff I would take an actual Stats level course.

The class was interesting but very disorganized likely due to it being new but the lack of time put into prep and organization of the lectures to make the course flow and not be repetitive was irritating. Tests were poorly marked multiple students with the same answers would get different marks.

DR. Roth is interested in teaching qualitative methods and really emphasizes teaching odds ratios. The textbook was not required reading but more of an aside for "further information". Make sure to follow test instructions to the letter and be prepared to define and exemplify key terms. Roth really encourages class discussion but it works poorly.

His marking seemed unfair. He is very relaxed and has an informal teaching style but is extremely specific in marking.

I really liked Dr. Roth! In class discussions are really important to him and I think that was very refreshing. There was no textbook for the class, and all of the information on the tests were directly off the slides. It's still a good idea to attend class because he is a good teacher and you'll miss out on great discussions

Roth is an incredibly straight forward teacher, that may at times sound like he's frustrated, but that's just his tone. He tries to engage all the class through their academic background, and is generally very informed on the subject. There were many class discussions. Overall it was an easy class.

Really nice guy! Easy-going. Just wants you to know general concepts - isn't detail-oriented. First anth class I have ever taken, and he made it a really great experience. Would take more classes with him.

Roth is a really great prof. He gave us two exams which were not easy but the assignment was marked on curve in favour of the student. He's got great stories tell, lots of experience and I think he's really really a nice guy.

Very interesting prof, loves what he does, is consistent and very well organized lectures. He involves the class and is engaging. Yes he uses his own textbook, but never read it once and I got an A+. Easy marker, no surprises on tests as long as one studies the powerpoint! Love him and would definately take any class he had to offer.

VERY brutal marker. Unprofessional. Doesnt mark the same for every student. Acts casual in class, and is very unfair on exams and projects. Actually stopped marking some peoples papers/exam essays for no reason, and didnt give one when emailed about it. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS! Uses own written texts for his classes.

He doesn't put up with idiots/whiners, which may be one reason some of them dislike him. The class is interesting, he obviously loves what he does, and is really helpful if you're having trouble.

Quite a contrast here. It appears that love/hate are your only two options. My experiences have been very posistive. Approachable professor with clear teaching style that is assited with PP notes on WWW. Fair exams with no suprises. P.S. To the student who got kicked out of class for talking, maybe your money would be better spent someplace els

Two completely different experiences: 355 AIDS course was one of the best courses I've ever taken. 353 Nutritional, well.. it was pretty monotonous and he kept insulting the class by asking us questions that were blantantly obvious.
