Good professor. Does ramble a bit in his lectures. Is helpful, but students have to be specific in their requests and questions. Clear emphasis on writing, but discussions were interesting and helpful.

Tendency to ramble incessantly in lecture about things mentioned in the textbook. You can skip every lecture but read the book and attend discussion. If you aren't a good writer or don't like history then this class is going to be difficult for you. Heavy emphasis on ability to write concisely and quickly (quizzes are short answer). OK.

I had an interest in the subject prior to attending, and am a History major, so I found this class to be pretty easy. The midterm is a paper, and there are a lot of quizzes. Prof Allen is a nice, helpful guy, with a genuine interest in what he teaches.

Do not take his class, African Americans Image in Film Class. He assigns books that are mandatory for papers, but never discusses what you are supposed to write. As well as what his criteria for grading is. Save yourself the trouble and don't take the class.
