Comment:
ENT 401 consisted of having to lead discussion in front of the class twice during the semester. These discussions must be lead for 40 minutes straight. It is nerve-wracking but it actually was quite fun! Dr. Sperling prepares you for the real world. This class was a lot of fun! A year end 12 minute presentation and term paper are also required.

He mentions on day one that you do not need to attend his lectures because everything is online. That's true! showed up three times. Exams are easy if you rip through the online notes a night or two prior.

If you like biodiversity in general, you will love it after a class with sperling. Very enthusiastic lecturer, straightforward notes and tests. The lab only held my mark down a little bit, but still pulled off an A. Recommend this guy.

He is very enthusiastic about the course material. All of the notes (in their complete form) are posted online and, therefore, it is not mandatory to attend his lectures. You must familiarize yourself with the species/genus names of quite a few organisms, but memorization is inevitable in a course like this. Recommended.

Class is a waste of time. I stopped going halfway through, memorized the slides, did the five practice problems he posted. Instant A+. He does make some jokes and cool examples in class, and he is certainly enthusiastic about the subject. Go if you're bad at memorizing; otherwise, you'll sail on through.

If you're like me and biology is one of your favorite classes, take sperling's lecture. His excitement about animals really rubs off on you. Tests are straightforward, no surprises if you study. Don't be fooled by the negative ratings; they probably came from students who go on facebook or text during the whole class.

Felix Sperling knows his biology one thing is certain. However he is a terrible teacher. No practice questions for studying. If biology is your major, then it might be fine. If its not your major and you dont care about ecology of organisms, I would suggest a teacher with better ratings, he is bad.

He just posts powerpoints online, which are basically copied from the textbook, and reads them aloud during lecture. Very dull, very boring.

He uses another prof's notes so it seems that he is rushing through them at times. Very enthusiastic and funny at times also. I would take one his classes. The course is pretty straight forward stuff. Notes are posted online, so you don't always have to go to lecture

Excellent course. The lab is very hands on and really crystallizes the material from the lecture. Encourages discussion in class. Often brings in news articles relating to the material, makes the subject matter seem very relevant in a greater context. Ask him about maggots, it's a great story :)

I did not expect to enjoy entomology, but Dr. Sperling was so enthusiastic, he really loves insects! I found his notes clear and useful. It seemed like the midterm focussed on a few of the topics, while leaving out a lot of significant material so it is hard to know what to study. He's very helpful and involved, sometimes showing up to the labs!
