Interesting lectures, passionate and easygoing! An awesome guy, cool class and absolutely manageable. Lots of reading, but easy marks for briefs. You really just have to show up, do the readings and write a couple of essays. It's not difficult to be engaged in his class.

the textbook is useless. Be incredibly careful when choosing your essay topic because some are so obscure there are no sources to find information on. pay attention to lectures and try your best to ask the seminar leaders what the hell is going on and you may just fly in under the radar.

Professor Klaassen is very helpful and willing to help outside class. Somewhat absent minded at times, but in his discussions he explains everything in an interesting and easy to follow way.

Absolutely loved this course. It helps to have an open mind considering it is a class about magic, but Klaassen presented materials so even skeptics could find it interesting. Clearly very passionate about the topic. Wish students would have been more respectful and less noisy. If you do the readings it's an easy class to pass.

If you want to be codled dont take his classes. He is enthusiastic and always willing to make time in his very busy schedule to help if needed. BUT you need to put the work in and if you actully show up and do your work, your grade will reflect that.

There is no textbook, which in this case is great because it allows Frank to explore an area of history he is passionate about sharing with students. The slides are well done and cover the key points but lecture attendance is a must as he fills in lots of extra points and ideas. Truthfully it was hard to miss a lecture as they were so engaging.

His class was super organized. You knew exactly what what coming up and the lectures were clear and engaging. Went out of his way to have open study hours or lunch hours to meet and chat with him. There was 1 reading per week and his feedback was clear. He truly cares and wants his students to succeed. So smart and passionate. Great guy!

Dr. Klaassen was great. He took time out of his busy schedule to help students and was always willing to give an extra lecture just to explain difficult topics. He is very passionate about history and tries to get the entire class involved. Very committed and professional.

This class was not enjoyable. There is no textbook, so it's really hard to study for. The lectures didn't really flow together, it was hard to make connections with what we were learning. I don't recommend this course.

Professor Klaassen is an interesting dude. His information and lectures on magic are interesting but he leaves all the marking up to the seminar leaders. Seminars are easy as long as you are prepared by reading the readings... once or twice. Final was all written and relatively easy. No midterms but 5 papers had to be done which were marked hard.

He never responds to emails, posts assignments the day they are due then 'kindly' gives us an extension. He relies heavily on group projects with little to no explanation. He does not tolerate opinions that are contrary to his. Everyday he is unprepared at the best of times. I strongly advise against taking a class with him.

He was very direct in what he wanted out of the class. But he was not very helpful if you didn't understand/do exactly what he wanted. He seemed interested in the material, which made the class interesting but he was a little to heavy for a first year course, I thought.

completely disorganized. class doesn't move in a chronological order... difficult for a history course. questions on final were a complete surprise - something that was mentioned once by a student ended up on the final. not recommended.

He is disorganized and does show up almost at least a minute late to every lecture...when he explains what he expects, its exactly what he wants - I followed the outline he gave for the final and it was a breeze. You barely use the class text though...and you really have to listen as he doesn't post/write notes. Pay attention and you should be fine

I really have mixed feelings about this prof. On the one hand, he is a great guy and fairly intelligent in his own right; on the other, he showed an overall lack of interest in teaching the course, he was very disorganized and wishy-washy, and expected far too much for a prof who, in the end, wasn't very informative or inspiring. Not recommended.
