Ulfers very well may be an accomplished and intelligent professor, but in his Freshman Seminar, he basically just rambles about his ideas and thoughts on the books we read - ideas that were entirely based on theories and not the texts themselves. He's SO sweet, and has some brilliant things to teach, but did it in the most convoluted, unclear way.

Really repetitive, but purposefully so. Sometimes when you sit in lecture it seems pretty boring but it really made me think about things in a different way and gave me a different perspective on texts.

Whether you're taking this class to fulfill a requirement, or you're taking it as a personal interest, it will be a good experience. I took the class as a requirement, but it ended up being my favorite class of the semester. Would take it again if I had the opportunity.

Best professor ever! His repetition of key points is precisely one of the reasons why I am able to get so much out of this class. You will probably be able to remember these ideas even years down the line because Ulfers takes basic concepts and connects them to countless different contexts. He knows just how to explain so that everything relates!

A fascinating and very clear lecturer with an infectious passion for the material (Nietzsche). He moves very slowly and is repetitive, but I counted this a strength since it helped me to grasp difficult concepts. Extremely king and generous in office hours; spent hours on several occasions helping with my paper.

Ulfers is a cute little old man who knows philosophy. He knows his material well and it shows if you talk to him after class--he realizes that he repeats himself, etc. A worthy text&ideas.

Blah blah blah...chiasmic unity...blah blah non-contradiction...blah blah blah Parmenides...Heraclitus...that's all folks. No one deserves to pay $4600 to hear such mind-numbingly boring, repetitive drivel.

Very very smart man. A little bit old to be teaching but definitely knows what he's talking about. Sends out notes which are very helpful esp. since in lecture he can get lost in his own thought process.TAs are extremely generous; this is a good, easy choice to get texts and ideas out of the way although it wasn't particularly interesting.

I had him for Texts&Ideas: Antiquities of the 19th century. Most grading is done by the TAs, but the TAs for this class are VERY generous. General consensus that he's the best class for your T&I requirement if you're in Stern. Easy A - 2 essays and a midterm which is just identifying quotes and a short 2 paragraph answer.

As a ConWest professor, he does a lot of German philosophers and writers, but the passion he has for them really shows in his lectures and you learn alot. Paper are easy, and he's always there to talk after class.

He is a very easy grader; test are usually 8 quotation identifications and a short essay. There are also two 6 pages response papers to your readings. Although recitation and lecture are both mandatory he can be an engaging lecturer, though sometimes, it can seem his vocabulary is limited to 'Duality', 'Dualism' and 'Chiasmic Unity'.

Prof. Ulfers is a really great teacher, and really passionate about what he teaches. He really only teaches Comparative Literature aside from ConWest, so he is pretty focused. It WOULD get a bit annoying when he would repeat the same things class after class after class, but ultimately it has proven to be one of my most rewarding classes at NYU.

his lectures may be a little tedious but its the only way to learn in his class- reading the books isnt enough, so go to class. hes a nice enough prof and is very enthusiastic about his subject which makes it a more interesting. you dont really have to read the bks b/c he'll tell you what you need to know. i liked his teaching style-learned a lot.

REALY REALLY GOOD CLASS. I thought I would hate ConW, turned out to be my favorite class. Stuff talked in the lectures gave me such different perspectives of life. Ulfers is an experienced teacher and obviously very knowledgeable. He can get repetitive sometimes, but only because he doesn't want anyone to want out of the class confused.

This guy is amazing. At first, you would think "WTH is this old man talking about?" But you would eventually catch on and learn a lot. Things he say makes sense and he's not babbling gibberish. Get Hilger as your TA if possible. Be warned: Don't be absent! Attendance counts in the grading.
