I've taken two of Professor Zackel's courses. He is passionate about what he does and enjoys helping students. In this course, we have to read long novels, but the quizzes that follow them aren't very difficult. A very good professor. I am thinking about taking another of his classes.

If you are taking an online class with him, the quizzes ask very specific, easily googled questions. Don't sweat reading every single email/module. If you read most of the book and set aside time for the quizzes, you should do fine. The hardest part is the two papers, so you'll need to read minimum 3 books. Ask for help, he responds quickly.

I took 2 classes with him as a fun class, and I am never disappointed. He has a lot of quizzes that are all scheduled (no pop quizzes), but easy if you read the material. Usually 2 papers, and he is always helpful, and answers questions promptly. The last class I received an A, and currently have the same.

Everyone mentions the emails but you won't understand until you're in the class. Sent over 100 emails last semester, each one 2 pages in length. Add that to the hundreds of pages you're expected to read for actual course modules each week and it gets a bit overwhelming. All the books can be downloaded if you know what you're doing.

Sends a lot of very long emails. Essay instructions can be kind of confusing. There are a lot of books to read and you have to take a quiz for each book. Professor responds to emails quickly. Not a bad class overall.

Prof zackel is NUTS. He sends 4-5 LONG emails a day and they make NO SENSE WHATSOEVER. The class isnt inherently difficult, but you have to read a lot. Each module has a ton of info you will never need, but he hides in there so you have to read it.I deleted all his emails without reading them and did just fine.

He assigned us 8 books to read through the course of 16 weeks and in total we had to read over 1,000 pages. He sent incredibly long e-mails daily, was unclear in his expectations, was condescending, rude and unwilling to help students. He makes this class much, much more difficult than it should be.

Took the online summer course. You have to read 7 books in a 6 week period and some books were 400 pages. It will be hard to take this class AND other classes because of all the reading you have to do. It's nonstop. Also have one argumentive essay to do for summer course. But if you read the books, the online quizzes are pretty easy.

Detective in Literature. I thought this was an amazing class. Yes, there are a lot of emails! However, there is quite a bit of information in those emails that helps with the quizzes. Do very well on the quizzes and you won't have to ACE the essays. I think he is an excellent teacher and would absolutely take his class(es) again!

Took detective lit online. Read a few books over the summer to get a head start. Stopped reading when classes started. Got really great scores on all quizzes even if i read them or not. Just had to do some quick online research for general info. Most answers you can google quickly. Lots of info and emails, kinda annoying but good easy online class!

This online class was interesting. SO much info on Blackboard. You definitely don't need to read 90% of it. If you read the books, the quizzes are easy. The research paper wasn't difficult. He's just not good at explaining things, but he sure does like to repeat himself. Not a bad class, not a good class.

LOVED THIS CLASS! I took detective fiction and over the course of the semester received 116 emails! VERY LONG EMAILS! But the class was extremely easy 2 papers and quizzes. Take this class! Does take a long time to grade papers but I will be taking all of his classes!

Worthless absolutly no focus or clarity about the subject matter and will flood your email inbox with useless and duplicate rambling emails. The only Great Idea is to not take the class. Only good thing is every quiz has extra questions that act as extra points.

The most expensive waste of my time. This man would talk and talk an dtalk about NOTHING. None of his lectures had much to do about the book. One day he talked about the state of our economy, the next it was abortion. The topics for the papers were crappy. What I hated most was that my inbox was flooded with long, rambling emails.

To be honest, I think he likes to hear himself talk. If you ask a simple yes or no question he will respond w/ 2 pages & nowhere in those pages is the answer to your question. He takes over 4 or 5 weeks to give papers back! His directions are totally unclear & he gives TONS of meaningless reading that has nothing to do with the assignment. My God!

It's not worth it to take this class. He tells us to write about our thoughts and opinions. When we do that we get poorly graded. Repeats himself a lot and half the time its a waste to go to the class

this class was semi interesting but he is boring. I think we went over the same notes for 3 weeks. You have to read alot!!! He repeats things alot and does brag about his life-he also spends a lot of time talking abotu things not on the test or for a paper. He grades so slowly-dont expect anything back for at least 3 or 4 weeks.
