Do not take this class unless you want to become a teacher. That criteria was specified nowhere in the course description, but we spent the whole semester discussing things in terms of "how would you explain this to your students?" Her grading is also arbitrary, and if you try to ask her why she took so many points off, you won't get an answer.

Comment:

I actually thoroughly enjoyed this class. Modan was fun and we participated in a lot of discussion. She can be distant and come off as rude sometimes when you talk in class but, for the most part, she is pretty relaxed. The material can be a little difficult and her tests are ones that you have to study for, but nothing too back-breaking.

Worst professor I have had at OSU. Flippant, rude, acts like you are wasting her time if you try and speak to her post-class (don't even bother with office hours). Most boring, dry class ever, she just lectures, material is lengthy and useless. Nitpicky grader- midterm is difficult, final project/final are easy.

She never really taught. Just sat there as we did discussions about what we read the night before. When a student would talk, she just nodded and made a smile which was far from genuine. For our final project, she asked us to incorporate one more thing into our project a week before it was due.

My reasons for vexation will surely not fit in 350 characters. Long story short, somewhat arbitrary, nitpicky grading, rewrites everyone's final projects, ridiculously plays favorites, has a ban on technology in class, tells overactive students to not participate. Consider yourself warned. That being said, it is a somewhat interesting course.

This class was extremely easy for me but she, while not a BAD professor, was sometimes irritating and confusing. I felt like a lot of stuff she taught was very opinionated and it seemed like she got annoyed with the class sometimes. The only thing that really messed me up was when we had a sub teach one day and they taught everything differently.

A challenging but worthwhile professor. She encouraged discussion and prompted students to think beyond what they thought they knew. A very good class to take, it will challenge your conception of language as long as you keep your mind open and engage in discussion. Its a class that you feel like you miss out if you skip.

Professor Modan is truly a gem in the english/linguistics department. She has a great personality and teaches so well that it makes you want to drop your major and join her area. You learn a lot in this class, and critical thinking and speaking are crucial to your success in her class.

It is obvious that she loves what she teaches but it is also obvious that she is horrible at teaching it. Boring lectures, never answers questions, looks at you as though you should know the answer to the question you are asking. Class could have been more interesting had it been taught!
