Comment:

Some of the complaints regarding Bittner show how entitled the average college feels nowadays: 'expects you to read the textbook' (boohoo), 'grades so that the average will be a C' (that should be the average, otherwise As and Bs lose meaning), etc. The privileging of student evals is ruining higher education.

His tests are impossible to study for. He claimed our first test was on chapter 1 (book only), which only was about 20% of the test. The rest of the exam consisted of terms we never learned nor were in our book. I studied the whole chapter as well as every note we took during lecture and still feel completely uneasy after taking the test.

He does show a big interest of what he is teaching and trying to help best explain what he is talking about. However, he speaks way to fast, if you ask him to clarify he doesn't. If you go to help for him, he is not much help. His exams are all essay but you need to memorize seven. It can be word from word his notes, and still be wrong to him!

He is an interesting professor and a nice guy. He has lots of flexibility with absences. However, I have found him to be very hard on grading. I felt like no matter how much I studied, I never did any different. That being said- there are people who did well (I just didn't happen to be one of those people).

Bittner is a GREAT professor... I must disagree with many of these comments .. I had multiple classes with him, and he was very helpful!! He also has a great heart and is very interesting! He is willing to help if you need it BUT you must talk to him AND work for your grade... you get what you work for!

I am reading everyone else's comments and I have to disagree. Bittner does pull 95% of his info for the tests from the book. If you read the book, you will be fine. I have had him twice and had a 3.0 in Urban Soc and a 4.0 in American Social Probs. GREAT PROFESSOR! I really like him and can't wait to take him again.

ok, his test are horrible. i have no idea where the man gets his information from but he is so educated AND CRACKS ME UP. i seriously have a good laugh everyday because of this guy. i wouldn't take him unless you have to.

seems nice enough in class, but once u get that test in front of u, u just wonder where he got this info from. says test are based on info from the book but after memorizing entire chpts., its obvious theres stuff on there thats not in the book or something hes said. unless u need 1 of his classes 4 ur major, avoid him-he'll probably kill ur gpa

Well, I would never take this man in a million years if my minor didn't require me to do so. He is a very depressed man that tells you America is going to hell and he's happy he won't be alive when it does so. not what you want to hear at 8am, eh? He does curve, but it helps you get a 70 instead of that 65 you earned. I studied, but it was useless

Worst professor ever! Don't ever ask him for help or anything. He likes to fail his students. He says that he wants the average grade in his class to be a 75, which means that half of his class fails. My overall GPA is way higher than the grade I got in his class. Tests are impossible!!

nice, interesting, intel. prof,but is forgetful & disorganized. needs organization & structure becz if he never mentions things in class & its not in the book but is on the test! how can you possibly know it? but penalized for not knowing on test? essay test require rote memorization of ALL facts.very hard grader considering his lecture style.

WORST PROFESSOR EVER! He goes on tangents. He cracks himself up over the stupidest things. He tells you you won't need to know something for the test, and then it will be on the test. And he has an annoying lisp. DON'T TAKE.

Lectures forever but the tests come directly from the book - not from what he says. Only things that he says that are on the tests are what he draws on the board - which is once a month so you never know when you can miss. Curves but test grades are still disappointing even if you study. He's nice but I don't recommend him.
