I would not recommend taking this class. The professor was very unclear when explaining the subject matter and refused to help when I asked. The TAs were the only ones who cared or knew what they were doing.

Ouch. Class was boring and the Professor was no help. Ridiculously uptight over nothing. TAs were helpful and really nice, but unfortunately they weren't teaching the class. Do not take this for your R2 req., as you will regret it by the second class meeting.

very hard class. i thought this would be an easy gen ed for r2 analytical reasoning as opposed to taking math but boy was i wrong! weekly timed quizzes that even my TA admitted she would have a lot of difficulty doing and the class moves very fast with little clarity. but if you have a man brain or prior music experience this may be easy for you...

This class was much harder than I expected it to be, so I would not take it as a simple gen-ed. That said I actually learned a lot in it and if music theory is something you are interested in I say go for it. :)

Loved the class. I'm really confident that I can sightsing almost anything given to me thanks to this class. The grading's a bit unfair, but do the work you get every day, practice, and you'll be fine.

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A FAIRLY EASY GEN ED! He makes it out like the class is going to be basic music theory but he goes off on tangents every class and makes things way more difficult then necessary. I would not recommend this class.

Gary Karpinski is an awesome professor. He's kind and brilliant... well, those two things don't go hand in hand very often! He truly taught me so much and in many ways changed my life through the knowledge I acquired. Thanks!!!

Karpinski's ear-training curriculum is amazing. I am now a graduate student at a top level conservatory, and I placed out of theory and aural skills because my foundation in those core classes was so strong. He is funny and kind, and he changed the way I hear music. Thank you!

Dr. Karpinski's teaching is responsible for my proficiency in ear training. His syllabus is well-organized, clear, and spans almost the whole gamut of what is necessary for good aural skills. An anecdote: I auditioned for a top conservatory in NYC and placed out of their *graduate*-level dictation and sight singing, based solely on his class.

A VERY clear and professional man, but he teaches teaching rather than teaches aural skills. (You can tell he LOVES to teach). However, a very well-run course and he keeps it interesting! Only take if you're serious in music and are willing to practice every evening.
