Dr. Bagby is quite obviously a very intelligent man, but that said he is a terrible professor. He keeps an air of superiority about him at all times and comes across as condescending. The course isn't that hard as long as you do all the readings and try a little, but don't expect any real help or clear explanations from Bagby.

I took several classes from Dr. Bagby in the mid-90s. I admit when I first took his class, I got my butt kicked but that's because I hadn't learn yet how to learn. Now, I know he's one of the best professors I've ever had. If you all today listen to what he has to say and keep up with your reading, you'll learn lots. Rock on, Dr. Bagby!

Probably the worst professor I have had at Hampden-Sydney. He teaches introductory coarses as if they are graduate coarses. If he is in a bad mood wile grading your paper, you will make a D-, but if he is in a good mood, you'll make a D+. That class sucks.

Bagby teaches serious thinking, strenuous reading, and the arduous pleasures of analysis. Bagby's classes are professional in their rigor, and he is the real thing as a teacher of romanticism and American poetry. The complaint that he is "too smart" is a sad reflection on those who make it.
