Comment:
You get the midterm/final questions beforehand, and you answer only 23 out of them. So if you do the readings, take good notes, and ask the professor any info you're missing, it is an easy A class. Participation in weekly discussions and in general matters a lot, but they are usually fun and engaging. It's more like a intro to philosophy class.

Only grades are the midterm and final. He obviously thinks that he's very funny (and can be at times) and dismisses those who don't understand his jokes. Still a good teacher though.

George McCarthy is a God among men. He's so smart and that shows in his lectures, he's able to re-articulate readings in a way that anyone who is legitimately interested in the field can comprehend. Don't take from him if you want to argue with him, but take his classes to learn from one of Kenyon's best profs and soak in his insightful manifesto.

McCarthy is great! Very helpful during office hours, willing to stay after class to continue to explore ideas. His lectures are definitely rehearsed but still interesting.

Comment:
Social Dreamers was an interesting class. The reading list was phenomenal...Locke, Marx, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, and others. Professor McCarthy is very intelligent and understanding. That said, lectures tend to be repetitive and very Marxist. Almost entire grade decided by exams. Still, great intro to Western intellectual history.

Mac is absolutely brilliant. He knows his stuff, and although he is overtly Marxist, he lets people think what they want to think and by no means does he force his views onto others. He has expanded my mind, and every time I leave class I'm amazed.

This professor is insane. He comes off biased and rude. He doesn't allow for in class questions and doesn't make an effort to get to know you as a student. Very unclear expectations for exams and vague comments on how to improve. 2 exams constitute entire grade. To me, this intro class didn't help me with future sociology classes. Avoid this class.

Biased, crazy, funny, and brilliant. Very smart guy and pretty interesting lectures but he's unbelievably biased and a really rough grader. Grade is based off a midterm and a final exam (which he probably doesn't even read).

biased? sure. brilliant? obviously. enthusiastic, passionate, hilarious, challenging. he can get side tracked in lectures, but that keeps class interesting. every day I left class in stunned awe. pay attention because he doesn't take any BS on the midterm/final.

People need to get perspective. I'm an aluma and think Mac had a profound influence on my thinking. He's a brilliant thinker and pushes students to the point of confusion. That's great for learning! Appreciate it because it's hard to find someone like him.

One of the best professors at Kenyon. Clear, insightful and comprehensive. Reading list is excellent. This course is not for slackers. You would do well to have some background in philosophy.

He is pretty condescending at times and is somwhat pretentious in his speech, so it makes it hard to talk in class. basically he's a dork. but obviously very smart, just not a good teacher for non-dorks.

A very biased grader who pushes his interpretations on his students. He boasts about how unacessible he is in class (his office hours are 8-10 A.M. when people are sleeping or have class) and boasts about how baised a grader is. Basically if you think for youself at all he's a bad teacher.
