I loved this class! He is super funny and the class is really interesting. His lectures are super helpful and if you go to class you don't need to read the book. The lab can be dull if you dont like rocks.

Comment:

Marchant is a really cool guy and so enthusiastic about his field, but his class is REALLY HARD. He really wants you to be able to recite the semester back to him on each exam. If you aren't absolutely in love with rocks and sediments and earth science in general, steer clear of this one. PS There are long, weekend field trips. Be advised.

Marchant is funny but kind of in a mean way. if you don't get something, you never will. tests are annoyingly difficult (the final was 20 pages no multiple choice - all diagrams and short answer!) Do NOT take this to fulfill a requiremnt, it's hard.

not really interested in geology but Marchant made it bearable. he was funny and engaging, and his tests were fair. Labs were a struggle but its a good class to take for your lab science requirement.

Pros: Sets clear expectations. Makes class interesting. VERY fair grader Cons: Labs are a very mixed bag depending on your TF. Textbook is completely unnecessary and in fact has too much information. Attendance is not mandatory but if you want to pass go to class. Don't by the textbook!

Marchant is a really nice, funny professor who is very interested in his field of work. However, this class was supposed to fill an easy freshman lab science requirement and it is actually pretty tough. If you don't love science, expect to work really hard for good grades. Tests are difficult and labs are sometimes confusing.

Best teacher at BU ! He loves his students and really wants them to do well. The information is super clear. He is able to engage even the most unenthusiastic student EVER. He tells you exactly what will be on the test and explains everything the book says. He knows so much about the topic he is teaching and it def shows.

If you are looking for an easy mid-level earth science class, this is NOT the one to take. Marchant is a phenomenal professor and makes each lecture entertaining, fun, and interesting. He expects a lot of his students and is very detailed in his exams. Exams are quite difficult and you need to devote a lot of time to studying.

Great professor and funny guy. Classes are on a boring subject but he tries to make them interesting. His tests are hard though and do require lots of studying. He randomly calls out names for attendance. Labs were dull but easy.

Really good, enthusiastic professor. Loves what he's teaching and knows tons about it. Helpful if you don't understand something. Lectures are usually very interesting, but they're packed with info, so exams have lots and lots of material. Exams are long, very detailed, and you need to study a LOT to get the answer that he wants. Fair grader.

Professor Marchant is a great professor, but he unfortunately teaches the driest subject possible. He tries to make the class fun. (Warning: Beware of flying chalk!) Everything you need to know for his tests comes from his mouth; there is no point in buying the textbook. Labs aren't bad, but the TFs weren't very clear about what we had to do.

Marchant is pretty entertaining and tries really hard to make earth science interesting and fun, but it just isnt. While he is a good guy and has a great sense of humor, his tests are pretty ridiculously hard. and there is a LOT of material. so unless you like science and are willing to study a LOT, don't take the class. labs aren't bad at all btw

By far the best professor I've had for any science class ever. He's so funny and keeps you interested in class even when its something as boring as tectonic plate movements. Loved ES 101 and I'm definitely planning on taking ES 333 which he also teaches. It's a perfect class for a lab requirement

marchant is the best professor I've had at BU, he does such a great job at keeping you awake in class, his powerpoint presentations are AWESOME, especially the Volcanoe one. He makes a class that could have potentially been really boring, extremelly interested. take him for the science requirement, or for fun. THE BEST PROFESSOR!!

Great guy. Plays Boston during his powerpoints. However, I wouldn't exactly call the material "exciting." For God's sake it's a course about rocks. Earth Science (damn that lab requirement) is only bearable because Marchant is such an engaging person.

Prof Marchant is awesome! He is funny and always pulls pranks on our class. His subject is a little dull but his enthusiasm makes you want to do well. His slide shows are amusing but watch out, he wants to recruit everyone to be an Earth Science major.
