Awesome professor! He's got a hilarious deadpan humor that you may or may not catch during lectures and has a lot of great advice to offer. I was hesitant to take this class because of the mixed reviews but I'm very happy that I did. If you ask for help, he's very insightful. If you don't ask, most of the class time is spent on workshop edits.

In this class, you'll be reading 5-20 short stories for homework before EVERY class, with a 5 question reading quiz on the stories listed in the syllabus for that day. You write only two short stories for grades and writing exercises grouped together for a single grade at end of quarter. NO LECTURES, you will NOT be taught to write in this class

Dr. Williams is amazing - a very witty, subtle humor. If you're easily distracted you'll miss a lot. He's insightful and very helpful. Wonderful to talk to one on one. I'm taking as many classes as I can from him.

If you want to learn how to write clean and simple short stories, by all means take his fiction classes. But prepare for endless workshops in which you have to print a copy of your story for every single member of your class out of your own pocket. He has a dry sense of humor: sometimes too dry.

My problematic fave. This man has taste and he's not interested in teaching you how to write pulp. He says no genre fiction for this class (fantasy, sci-fi, etc...) but it's amazing how many people will still show up with garbage about dragons. He's amazingly patient and too nice to tell people they're terrible, but he'll hint at it.

He cracks dumb jokes so often people don't even realize he's joking. He starts every critique of the 2 MLA format essays you do with "Not to single out this manuscript but.." but he isn't a bad teacher. Read the stories as the dates go on the syllabus don't just skim them there is very short quizzes every class on them. Great chance to make friends

Dr. Williams is simply brilliant. His dry humor made the class fun and he doesn't settle when it comes to his students. Tough grader, but what great teacher is easy? Would absolutely recommend taking him if you want to actually learn to be a better writer.

George Williams is a very intelligent man of good taste. He can sniff out bull-ogna and he doesn't put up with inconsiderate/disrespectful students. If you don't take literary fiction seriously, don't take this class. Take Prof Rabb if you want formulaic structure-based lessons on story. Take Prof Williams if you want to be a better writer--period.

Professor Williams fills the class with small moments of wisdom. He recognizes and cultivates talent. Unlike many Profs who do it by the book, he teaches fiction the way it ought to be taught: with grit, gumption and truth. I recommend him if you actually care about fiction and not some formulaic, inauthentic nonsense other writing Profs teach.

George Williams is brilliant. He is a witty, sharp, clever but subtle man. He doesn't just teach you how to write--he teaches you how to be a writer. You will pass up on brilliance if you don't take a class from George Williams.

With professor Williams expect to have a quiz every class and to buy way too many books filled with short stories. He seems like a nice guy but he's a bit out of it. Every class was just taking a quiz on a few of the many many stories we had read, then reading each others' stories. You really won't learn much.

My first impression of Williams was negative. I thought he was dry and boring--over time he proved me wrong. He is very intelligent; he also cares about his students. He has no problem criticizing bad writing, and I respect him for that. He helps students grow as writers and learn to write far more compelling narratives.

Very easy grader, but he's of the opinion that the only way to learn how to write is to read (literary fiction), which defeats the purpose of spending about $200 per class. Doesn't discuss readings. Take him if you want an easy A and three workshops. Avoid if you want to learn techniques for dialogue, staging, pacing, or story/character arcs.

Great class, great professor. I'm a much better writer because of this short story class. I learned the importance of making every word count. Good freedom in writing topics and an encouraging professor.

Dr. Williams is incredibly smart and a super interesting professor. I learned how to critically analyze my own writing from him, something I never thought I could learn taking a 101 class. If you leave this school without taking him, you've suffered a great loss.

I'm in his short story class. We basically read stories for homework and take 3-4 question quizzes, which are sometimes easy. We spend class doing workshops, which means reading other student's stories. It's okay. He's a quiet man with a surprising sense of humor. He doesn't give a lot of personal feedback. Don't talk over people or interrupt thoug

Professor Williams is a nice guy, but a little blasé. He's not always 100% clear with what he wants from you, but his assignments and quizzes are easy.
