Gerard is a fine prof for a hard course. It is very important to come to class as the material is extremely hard to learn on your own. The entire course is graded on tests and assignments. Evry class even on test days has a lecture.

I got an A in this class (and took 4 other classes); here's how: 1) took it once a week in the evening 2) reviewed CLASS notes (don't even need to buy the textbook) 3) had three hour breaks twice a week - did those worksheets he puts on BB during those breaks (1 worksheet per unit learned) *His quizzes are EASSSYYY if you do the worksheets.

Very nice person and clear lectures. Often let us out 5-10 minutes early and sometimes even 30 minutes early. It wasn't his fault that the final exam was too hard since it was written by other profs and he didn't even get to see it.

Attendance is necessary to receive a good grade. Great notes, easy quizzes and fair exams, as long as you do his practice. Likely best prof in the department.

This class is easy as long as you put in the time to actually do all the practice problems. I never bought the textbook, I just used his notes to study, and did ALL of the practice questions he put on blackboard (test questions were very similar). He's also a really nice, approachable guy. Got an A+ in this class, he's not as hard as everyone says.

He is probably the best stat prof at U of C. His notes are really good. STATS is painfully boring, especially when it's a 3 hour lecture. Don't buy the textbook, it's pretty useless. All his test are fully written and you really need to study to do well but it's by far easier than other prof's multiple choice.

Seriously the best stats prof at the UofC. Take this class in summer. His notes are gold, posts up practice midterm and final and he is always willing to answer questions. Midterm and Final were a lot easier then I expected it to be. Highly recommended prof

He has excellent notes so going to lecture is a must! His quizzes aren't hard if you study. I see a lot of poor reviews about him not "linking" things and not telling you where to use methods when he writes down exactly where in class. He is very approachable and willing to answer questions. Definitely one of the best stats profs.

Best stats prof at U of C. Stats is really tough, but his notes are crystal clear and organized. He responds all the time to emails he receives from his students. If you have to take Stats 217 I would recommend to take it with Professor Labute. The midterm and Final aren't bad if you're willing to put in the work.

Worst prof i have ever had. Has no interest in helping his students succeed and only meets the bare minimum for teaching the course. Does not at all go out of his way to help you learn the material.

He's a good prof, hand writes all his notes and is pretty organized. You dont need the textbook, he gives worksheets almost every week. As long as you do the worksheets and tutorial sheets you should do fine.

Avoid Labute! Ridiculously Hard exams! plus, his averages are low, and he doesn't curve! I failed the exam by 1 mark and had to re-take this class thanks to him (and the average on the final was like 57%). Completely unhelpful when you ask him questions, and he only teaches through examples, which makes the class that much harder. Avoid!

I withdrew from this class after the midterm. Class average was 52%, I got 50%. The 2nd last quiz I got 30% because it covered so much. Be aware that the quizzes get harder as they go, as well as cover more as they go. So glad I dropped it and am taking it again with another prof! If you can avoid him DO IT
