Comment:
It seems as though he resents having to teach 100-level courses. Very condescending to my class, which was very clearly there to get the gen-ed done. Very unclear when it came to the sentence-assignments as well as with questions concering papers. Very discouraging.

Pretty challenging and stimulating, hard for an intro English class, a little too hard. But taught me a lot about my writing, expects attention and participation from students. Plenty of work. A little bit rough, but not bad teacher. Take if serious about learning to write.

Bleeth also gives out A's; I've received that grade on my writing, and some of my friends in the class also have. If you got a D, maybe your writing wasn't that great.

Comment:
Professor Bleeth has an inflated ego and is relatively unhelpful when it comes to paper-writing. His expectations are far too high, considering most of his courses are requirements for ENG majors. I strongly suggest avoiding Bleeth. He will rip your papers apart and hands out D's and F's as if he has a quota to do so.

I'm in the same class as the previous poster. Bleeth isn't in the business of "making you feel good about yourself", but he's a fantastic teacher. I've learned more in this class than in any previous english class, and he makes you want to do better than you thought you could.

I never much liked poetry before I took this class, but now I get it, thanks to the professor. Bleeth has standards, and he expects you to live up to them. He's tough on your writing, but he's also willing to spend time with you to improve it (mine writing has gotten a lot better). If you're serious about literature, this is the class to take.

Fantastic professor! Real old-school teacher who still believes in respect for scholars. And he earns it. His grading is tough, but it flame-tempers your writing. Expects near-graduate-level work from undergrads. Kind man, and enthralling lecturer. Some ego, sure, but that's part of what makes him great. Uncompromising and inspiring.

I was so relieved to be challenged in an English course at Conn-Bleeth helped me improve immensely as a student. It's saddening that so many students here equate difficulty with poor professorship. I highly recommend Bleeth to anyone serious about English, their writing, and growing as an academic.

I don't know who wrote those two harsh comments on the Chaucer course, but they don't describe the class I was in. There was no favoritism. Everyone was listened to with respect. This was one of the most stimulating courses I've taken at Conn---Bleeth is a scholar and treats his students like scholars.

This was one of the most rewarding English classes I have taken at Conn. Prof. Bleeth's admirable passion for the material and dedication to teaching is unparalleled in the department. He challenges every student as a critical reader and writer. No English major should graduate Conn without having taken a class with Prof. Bleeth.

Ken Bleeth is smarter than you. I don't care who you are. Insightful, gentle yet with a sense of purpose all too often absent from Conn classrooms, and patient, he guides the class with the steady hand of a seasoned skipper. Also, he doesn't take ****, which is refreshing.

Listen, I got a C- in this class, my lowest grade of all time. But you know what - I deserved it. And since taking his class I've had a far easier time writing good essays for other English classes. The guy is from Harvard and if you want to get by without really working, like he wouldn't ever say, "it ain't gonna work."

a pleasure to take a class with a prof. who still has standards. Too many college students graduate without knowing what the demands of true scholarship really are; he pushes all of his students to discover how hard work and searching for the right questions opens up literature to new interpretation

It seems to me that Bleeth is more interested in encouraging people NOT to be English majors than in encouraging them to BE English majors. After taking this class, I have avoided him at all costs...even taking both my pre-1800 courses abroad!
