Comment:
She rarely discusses the assigned readings in class. I did other hw in this class as it usually the same spiel all week long. Get's distracted super easily, taught us how to search on the library website for a whole class. Easy grader though so if you can put up with boring lectures she's great. Also slack final and the assignments are easy too.

Comment:
The class itself is easy, but incredibly boring. Possibly the most boring and useless class I've taken at UBC. I cannot think of a single thing I've learned in the course. Gisele is nice and approachable, but has a very annoying tendency to overrepeat information and goes off on long tangent stories completely unrelated to course material.

A very clear and straightforward prof. She really makes ir clear what shes looking for in our essays and gives super helpful feedback for us to improve. While the lectures were a little dry, readings help participation so much and it becomes more bearable. I wrote all my essays 30 mins before the deadline, did 0 of the readings and got and A

Prof. Baxter is super lenient and extended course deadlines often. She grades her papers fairly, so that you get the grade that you would expect. She's super helpful, understanding, and responds to questions by email ASAP. Not much effort is needed to pass this course as long as you complete the assignments. Lectures are quite boring though.

Gisele is super boring in class, but she is in essence a very nice and sweet professor that is lenient and cares about her students. Just try not to fall asleep. Show up and do the midterm, finals, and papers well and you will do fine. Easy grader in general too. Lots of opportunities to do well. 10/10 would recommend.

Lectures were a bit repetitive and boring. She is extremely concerned with keeping possession of all of her IP and makes it known regularly, which is her right, but adds to the repetition. However everything that needs to be done is laid out extremely clearly, and the papers are marked much easier than I assumed.

Gisele Baxter is very clear in her expectations, uploads detailed learning modules on Connect, and is a very generous marker! The key to getting a good grade in her class is to participate regularly, do most of the readings, and put some effort into your critical analyses. The final exam was pretty easy too.

I think people assume this class will be easy just because it's on children's books. While the readings are quite easy, be prepared to do some critical analysis and preferably have taken some english courses already. Overall, a great course, and she's honestly the most helpful professor I've had. Extremely prompt with emails, and very accommodating

HER LECTURE CLASS IS DEFINITELY THE MOST BORING CLASS IN UBC HANDS DOWN! SHE DOESN'T TEACH US ABOUT THE CONTENT OF THE COURSE,RATHER SHE GOES ON AND ON ABOUT THE HISTORICAL CONTEXT THAT IS COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT TO THE COURSE.I LEARN FROM BROWSING INTERNET MORE THAN A WHOLE SEMESTER OF HER LECTURES

Such a hard marker! This class is meant for those who have no background in English Lit, yet she expects that we write like a 4th year lit student. She responded extremely quick to e-mails but what ever help she gave was useless. If you are doing this for a lit requirement AVOID this class!

I was disappointed that it was a class of 150 and our papers were marked by the TA's. A lot of the students fell asleep during lectures. I think she certainly has something to teach you... but I wasn't thrilled with this class.

I had a disappointing overall experience. With the lighter subject matter, overly punitive marking followed to 'make it appear serious'. Superfluous lectures, marked attendance is the only motive to attend. Good texts, Gisele absolutely cares about the material and student responses. It was just so dry, more close minded with papers than lectures.

I really liked her Eng 100 class. As others have said, she does tend to go off on pointless, unrelated tangents but it doesn't really effect the overall class. She still manages to communicate interesting aspects of the readings and is very clear about her expectations and assignments. There is a minimal workload and no useless assignments.

Dr. Baxter is a pretty good teacher, all things considered. While she does tend to go off on tangents concerning historical context in too much detail, her discussions about the texts are interesting and useful when writing in-class essays/papers. The reading list itself was also good. She gives helpful comments on essays, as well. Connect-based.

Interesting lectures, pay attention, may go off on tangents, talks about course for 20 minutes before she actually lectures. Good reading list. Relatively fair marker. Very picky about grammar. You need to love gothic. Vista based. Participation required.

Comment:
Prof. Baxter's first year English class is a nice introduction to University Writing in regards to literature. She can go off topic sometimes and seems to be a bit nervous while talking but knows her things and often contribute in student discussion on vista. Not the easiest marker but gives you quite specific feedbacks.
