Comment:
Dr. Deer's classes were relatively boring. Most of the texts selected were based on the same themes and got repetitive. Most learning happens in discussion groups conducted by TAs. Too much disparity in grading between TAs. No electronics policy was sometimes difficult.

Comment:
Glenn Deer is a fairly good professor. His lectures tends to be a little boring and he rambles on for far too long, but it's never been that unbearable. He is very friendly and extremely respectful of his students' responses to his questions. Overall, it's an easy class.

This professor was really nice and seemed engaged with the content, but I was bored a lot during this class. He does a lot of summarizing and reading and it's just not for everyone.

Most lectures spent on summarizing textbook materials and readings. Most learning takes place in discussions--which is just everyone ramble one or two sentences about the material and ends. You won't learn much about English at all, although the required readings are extremely promising.

Glenn is a thoughtful and engaging professor. He led very stimulating class discussions and was always very respectful of different ideas. Glenn gives incredibly detailed, specific, and lengthy written feedback on assignments and essays, which is wonderful to have in a grad seminar. He has a wonderfully quirky sense of humour.

Don't do this to yourself. Don't take English 110 with Dr. Deer unless you absolutely have to. The lectures, the books, just everything about the course was beyond boring. Don't take the course. Don't do it. You will be grateful.

I really don't understand the bad ratings on here, Professor Deer was my favourite prof this semester! His classes are pretty easy, he is engaging with the texts. Lenient as far as make up tests/essays if you're sick or can't make class. Gave us questions that might be on the final and made the final exam open book. Take this class with him!

Very kind professor. He tends to ramble on way past class time but it's because he genuinely cares and is interested in the material. A bit awkward but overall class was worthwhile. Book list is promising but was a bit much for one term.

Some lectures tend to drag on too long and he gets excited about the history of the books your reading and talks for a while about it. However he is knowledgeable, helpful and open to discussion

This course and reading list sounded incredibly promising, but ended up being one of the least enjoyable English classes I've completed. I found the class incredibly grating and overly reliant on synopsis, often spending much of the 80 mins. on summary. Expected a lot from students, but not in line with the material he offered to us to draw from.

Overall a good professor. His lectures are sometimes a bit tedious (50 mins would have been way better than 80). His lectures sometimes get a little boring, but he is open to questions and discussion, he is very knowledgeable and he is very fair on marking and on creating his exams and quizzes. A good intro to university english.

Extremely boring, all he does is summarize. I really wish I had not taken this course, it was a complete waste of time. Avoid it if you are actually looking for someone engaging.

Alright prof, quite nice. Marks are fair enough, but he's a hard marker. You can raise your hand 3x per class and be lucky to scrape up a low A for participation. Scrounge up all the marks you can on the quizzes (they're easy, just study what he writes on the board). Good course, but I wouldn't recommend taking the course if you need high grades.

He should not be teaching at a university level, or maybe all english 100 classes are made to be a joke. Basically, he does not help in the understanding of the books but merely summarizes what occured. I have learned nothing and, yet, he marks very hard after giving minimal direction. I hope I never get him again.

He's a nice and friendly teacher that really shows that he cares. The only thing is that I did not find his class to be interesting at all and I didn't like most of the books that he picked. I'm not a big fan of canadian literature but he did pick one book that showed me there are always exceptions, Olympia.

He's a very nice and friendly person and he selected several good books for our Asian Can Lit course, but his teaching style is disappointing. His lectures concentrate more on summarizing the reading than actual interpretation and analysis, though those are expected on exams. Lectures were not suitable to a 4th year level.

I loved the books, and I loved the subject matter. This class did justice to neither. Loads of discussion based classes, but of a high school level. I learnt nothing because I did nothing in the class. He's a nice guy, and is probably good for lower-level or grad school, but not for upper-level undergrads.

Actually, I hated this class with a passion. His lectures were absolute surface level, he lets students get away with saying moronic things (even ****) about the novels we read. I felt like I was in grade school. Rarely did I leave that class without feeling angry about what a waste it was.
