If your are merely looking for an easy GPA boosting course,you should stay clear of any course taught by Dr. Martel. Martel knows his stuff, his lectures are informative and clear. However, hes a bit awkward and can seem like a bit of a**, but if you can look past his hard exterior, hes actually very kind and helpful. P.S. hes at UVIC now

Great class, unfortunate that so many kids dont get that university is not high school. You actually have to read your books and study to earn a grade. Martel is the best unbc has, so et over yourselves for not working hard enough.

Don't take a course with this prof. The text book he used was useless, his lectures were VERY hard to follow and his tests were impossible. He is a nice person but his classes will make your GPA suffer.

I would not recommend taking a class with Martel. He is very unhelpful. He wasnt even around to contact in the few days leading up to the final. Is a teacher who does not care,is there to get his money and I feel totally sick that I help pay his wage. Never again will I take a class with him. Martel is one of the more difficult HIST profs which makes him worthwhile for any serious HIST major. While his lecture style is much dryer then others he is well educated and knows his stuff. He is also very helpful guiding students along with papers. As for those who bash martel relentlessy your just a bunch of whiners who scared of a challenge

Boring and arrogant - a lethal combination. He is an academic bully who thinks a lot of himself .... but he is so misguided because he has done little to nothing other than bully students, colleagues, and everyone around him. His personal and professional failures may explain his horrible behavior in the classroom.

European history through novels -- I took his course many years ago. Innovative, reasonable class discussions, fair marker. Although it was a summer course, the reading expected was still excessive: 200 to 600 page novels twice a week.
