Dr. Haenel is very knowledgable and excited about his classes, to be fair. The fact is, his grading is impossibly hard. You cannot argue for points, and you need to memorize your notes to get any kind of good grade on a test. Also beware of extremely specific homework questions that are meant to trip you up.

The quizzes and exams are pretty much impossible unless you take extremely detailed notes, and even then they are hard. His questions are extremely confusing, but he is overall a good teacher. He baked cupcakes one time for showing up the day before break and he is actually hilarious. Still, his class is very hard.

I really like Dr. Haenel! I have him for pop bio every morning and he keeps my interest the full time (I surprisingly don't even find myself checking the time) and explains things well. He makes the material interesting and has a good sense of humor. Sometimes he's hard to follow and scattered, but raise your hand and he'll clarify. Haenel>>>Hamel

Professor Haenel made this class so much harder than it needed to be. Exams were reasonably tough, but it was close to impossible to get more than half credit on any given short answer question. I was also truly disappointed with the way he discouraged any discussion in lecture.

Dr. Haenel is exceptional. He communicates his knowledge well. All concepts are drawn out on the board. Tests can be difficult, but fair. If you want to learn and you're willing to do some work, I highly recommend Dr. Haenel. If he is unable to help outside of class, there are a dozen more excellent professors in the department willing to help.

I love Dr. Haenel. The class was really hard, but I think it's the subject that was hard and he tried to do the best with it. Don't consider this class unless you're willing to work really hard, but if you do it can be a lot of fun and Dr. Haenel is really helpful and encouraging.

Haenel is a sweet, dorky, bio-loving guy. His material isn't too hard to comprehend and his sense of humor comes out when you don't expect it (so you can't help but laugh). Not too work-intensive and text is barely used. Gives small quizzes on occasion, usually only half sheets of paper.

He's a really nice guy and has a quirky sense of humor. The class was pretty easy for me, but I tend to take a lot of notes in class which may have been the reason. I can see how it would be possible to get lost if you weren't paying attention.

Pop Bio is a class meant for science majors. Dr. Haenel is a good teacher, though, he has his days where the information presented is a little unclear. But, for the most part he does a good job...he has great examples to help you learn the concepts.

Don't take this class if it's not req. for your major. A bunch of pain in the ass busywork, and tests that suck. So inaccessible out of class-not willing to help at all. Has a personal passion for Bio but doesn't care if his students do well.
