Hardest intro course I've taken at the U. Knows her stuff, but makes it way too difficult for students.... I feel like she wants to teach as much as possible and I felt so stressed with her the entire time I didn't actually learn anything

here's the thing about Van Dyke. took her for my seminar. The class was very boring and long. She was never clear about assignments and it took her two months to return graded papers. With that being said, I still got an A. She's no help and if you aren't a good writer stay away from her. pretty sure half my class got Cs. I was lucky I can write

Had her for a seminar class. Most useless class I've ever experienced. Waited til the last day of the semester to give back graded papers I handed in within the first two months. I didn't know how I was doing in the class until the very end. Lectures were boring

Manageable class but not a good teacher. Class consists of a few quizzes and tests. Quizzes are strictly fill in the blank vocab questions from the text. Test is mostly vocab as well but some other short answer/essay questions. The test is more of a vocabulary class than anything. Lectures are largely useless.

Dr. Van Dyke is a pretty straightforward teacher and i cant complain at all about her. She will come through for you as long as you try your best and make sure she knows so, i wish i went on the EU class like she had asked me. I changed majors and havent been able to take her anymore :(seriously take her!)

Hard. Unfairly picky when grading papers. Must read everything for class. Likes discussion, and the discussions are enjoyable. Only thing is that she is obviously a feminist liberal (which I don't care about) who makes it known. Picks on you if you don't agree with her.

SHe is very nice lady but most of the tests are based off material she doesn't cover at all or doesn't cover well. Have to do all learning on your own through the book. Not to difficult but exremely picky and wants lots of details even when she askes for brief answers. A brief answer is 1-2 paragraphs. Also takes her weeks, sometimes months to get

Government class. if you can stay awake for an hour fifteen of lecture take her! VERY NICE but gets sidetracked easily. Quizzes and Tests are all vocab and useless fill in, if you read and practice it wont be so bad.

Comment:

DVD is a fantastic person. Her EU class is by far one of the best offered by the University, it's a ton of reading, writing and group projects, but no tests and a fun DC trip at the end. She really cares about her students and usually offers to do recomendations for her EU kids after they survive her rigorous class.

She took a subject I love and made me thoroughly hate going to her class. I found her to be very pretentious, one of those New York Times cultural elitist types. She even tries to force you to subscribe to NYT, as if no other news source could possibly inform you. Her tests were very difficult, and to have a cumulative final here is excessive.

Dr. Van Dyke sought me out to be in her EU class as I'd done one in Europe the year before. Fabulous experience take the class. Great reason to get to hang out in DC. She will expect you to be smart, respectful and prepared to eloquently present your knowledge at all times. A little quirky but a respectable professional in her field.

DVD knows her stuff...real smart. I hated her first semester but once you know how she teaches and how she tests, she's actually a good teacher. Nice lady, fun to kid around with. Learned so much in her class. You have to work though, and its not going to be easy..

She was corrected by students *SEVERAL* times- but insisted on teaching incorrect things. On the first test she was VERY unclear about something- and most of the class failed... However, if you read the book you'll be fine. Just don't put too much stock in her notes and lecture. She wastes time.
